A Place for Us Greyhounds has created a list of books that we've found helpful. We strongly suggest that at least one book from our "Recommended Reading" list be read prior to adoption. These books are excellent references and have helped us learn more about our favorite breed. If you have a greyhound or are considering bringing one into your family, these are must haves!!

Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies

This is one of the best reference books published on Greyhounds and written for Greyhound owners! Its answers all of the questions that a person wanting to adopt a greyhound might have. Lee covers everything from what to expect when you first bring your new greyhound home, separation anxiety, medical advice and to how to clicker train. Recently nominated for an award, this is a MUST READ for greyhound owners and potential greyhound adopters!

Childproofing Your Dog

The authors of Good Owners, Great Dogs offers advice on picking the best breed for a family dog, avoiding common dog/toddler problems, training an older dog to accept an infant, and other topics.

Greyhounds: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual
Author: D. Caroline Coile
Publisher: Barron's Educational Series

A small volume that is packed with information about retired track and show greyhounds. The book has excellent pictures with well researched information and a good price. The only improvement would be to add a description of sighthound safe martingale collars. A MUST for every wanna-be owner.

Guide to Adopting an Ex-Racing Greyhound

This book gives an excellent overview of what to expect when adopting an ex-racing greyhound. It also gives important advice on how to keep a Greyhound healthy. A good book to read before you make the decision to adopt a greyhound and a good book to have after bringing a new adopted home.

This book is a great reference to have, especially if you need information on illnesses and other problems that may occur with your greyhound. It also gives equal time to both show and racing greyhounds, and gives a European perspective on this breed. (and lots of pictures to boot!)

There is advice and information to help the former racer adapt to a new home environment.

The Dog Who Loved Too Much
Author: Nicholas Dodman

Amazon.com Review: The author is a veterinarian now practicing at Tufts Institute, who has years of experience treating "problem" dogs. He tells their stories here: fearful dogs (such as the dog in the title who cannot bear to be separated from her owners), phobic dogs, and dominant dogs, among others. Dodman's personal interest in each dog and owner enhances this interesting book of how we can better understand our dogs' behavior and the treatments that can help solve problem behaviors. Dog owners and dog lovers will find this a fascinating and useful book.
