Racing Queensland stands down 23 more greyhound trainers after live baiting scandal
Updated 39 minutes ago

Racing Queensland has stood down 23 more greyhound trainers after the live baiting scandal.

Thirteen trainers in the state were suspended after the ABC's Four Corners program revealed the use of live baiting to train greyhounds in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Five of those 13 trainers have been banned for life by Racing Queensland.

Two trainers have also been charged with animal cruelty offences.

Live baiting has been illegal for decades, but trainers and owners across the country have allegedly been using the training method in the belief that it will improve dogs' performances.

A Racing Queensland media release said the action was taken as part of ongoing investigations into the same training track at Churchable, about 50km west of Brisbane, used by other trainers who had been warned off or suspended.

CEO Darren Condon said after reviewing further video footage, stewards had cause to start investigating the individuals and stand them, along with their greyhounds, down in the meantime.

"When we began this investigation we said we would leave no stone unturned, and through our ongoing investigations it has become apparent there were a number of individuals using this facility for illegal training practices," Mr Condon said.

"Each of the trainers stood down were at least present at that track, and as a result stewards have stood them down immediately to understand their involvement.

"The people suspended today will now face stewards' inquiries and the broader investigation from our end will continue."

Mr Condon said Racing Queensland did not intend to seize greyhounds owned or trained by the suspended people at this stage.

However, the greyhounds would be suspended from competition immediately pending further investigations by stewards.

Racing Queensland recently introduced a return to race policy, applicable to any greyhound suspected of being exposed to illegal training practices.

"This process entails three trials over a minimum of three weeks with conditions to be set by stewards and an assessment of the dog's behaviour in those trials," Mr Condon said.

Mr Condon reaffirmed Racing Queensland's commitment to rid the sport of animal cruelty practices and drive change within the industry.

Typical sensationalist journalism ... And I notice there's NO mention of 'live baiting' charges against one participant (who was originally facing a Life ban and a Show Cause notice) being thrown out last night?

Funny they can pick up the bad news, but fail to mention the rest.

I know which one was likely to be the most significant (and I'll give people a clue: it's not the part about the 23 Trainers).

And to provide further BALANCE, to the best of my knowledge these people have NOT been charged, NOR are they currently facing Show Cause notices. Most I heard of have been asked to attend as "people of interest to RQ concerning their ongoing investigations into allegations of live baiting against some participants".

Ps - I acknowledge that they have been suspended pending further enquiries, and their (race) dogs suspended for the time being as well. Hardly a desirable situation, but to be clear, they are NOT yet charged, and nor are they necessarily going to be.

"Each of the trainers stood down were at least present at that track....."

Wow....those CRIMINALS!
Shoot them! Hang them! Guilty until proven innocent.

If I was ever treated in this way I would be going straight to a lawyer and suing the ass off them!

A few got suspicious mail yesterday Sharon, as mentioned on the Qld Greyhound Racing thread. Disgusting acts by whoever sent them.

So another 23 stood down or "suspended" according to CEO Condon but he fails to name names so in effect we are all guilty by association. Surely he's got some professional ethics to at least name the 23 people stood down rather than leave a shroud over every licensee. Then again this is the same person who was sent an email asking him to investigate claims of live baiting last October and he did nothing about it. At the time same person was making a big song and dance about integrity and animal welfare being high on his list of things to do. Hate to think was a low priority item. The live baiting alert to Condon was similar to the case where animal traps were found on a licensee's property, taken to Racing Queensland and again nothing done about it. Surely for $3 million the McSporran enquiry will expose these people who have, for some unknown reasons, been given the nod to run racing in Queensland.

CONUNDRUM:

After the low act terrorist ANTHRAX scare, do they risk exposing more names for the low lives to attack, or tread more discreetly with naming names after proof there are people willing to inflict terror on innocent people???

Something to consider?

One of the families targeted wasn't even tied up in the live baiting allegations as far as I know.

The nutters behind it - like numerous anti-racing organisations - have us all tarred with the same brush.

Honestly can someone tell me what you would be looking for in these trials to make the process worthwhile???

They're looking to see if it generates positive press and gives the impression that they are doing something.

Pointless.....stupid.....not in the regulations ANYWHERE (and therefore a complete overstepping of their authority)....and will achieve NOTHING.

Don't think it even made the news . Imagine if it was the other way around.

Brian, as far as I can ascertain, neither has the fact that Greg Stella effectively had the serious charges originally claimed against him, dismissed.

As I said before, it leaves me wondering WHO is feeding the journalists, and WHAT their 'agenda' might be?

I have AGAIN had to write to Racing Qld this afternoon to let them know of FURTHER breaches of welfare, which I have been trying to resolve with them for as much as FOUR WEEKS in some cases with our own dogs. It shouldn't be too hard (surely?) to expect them to be acting at ALL TIMES in the best interests of the GREYHOUNDS that they want to try to make out (to the media, at least) are "so important" to them.

Makes my blood boil!!!

Yes Grant I did as a matter of fact and I found out what I needed to know. I also gave feedback that owners need to be contacted in these types of situations as people need to know where the dogs stand.

Hellen ....please understand one thing .....If we sit and hide we perish ....We need to be out there and everywhere on the front foot .....All greyhound participants need to be pro active because our GREYHOUND CONTROL BOARDS IN EACH STATE are not helping US IT'S MEMBERS .......The internet is our biggest and greatest weapon to combat the politicians the animal activists and our Greyhound boards .

Look at the way the greyhound owners and trainers have been treated in Queensland so far and without forums just like this one we would never of known how... MR MAGGO THE CEO of Queensland racing was treating OWNERS and Trainers Australia WIDE.....
