Can someone explain to me the proper procedure involved in shipping a bitch to Ireland from the UK to get mated in terms of having her rabies jab etc? Is there any other things need doing before i can ship my bitch there and back to get mated.

Thanks in advance

Hi John, This is my take on the situation from personal experience but you would be as well to contact your chosen transporter and ask them as well.

UK into N. Ireland nothing required as the North is part of the UK.

UK into Southern Ireland you need a pet passport, microchip and rabies injection and the dog can't travel until 21 days after the rabies injection. That is all you need if the dog is your own pet and you are transporting it yourself on 'holiday'
If it is going commercially with a transport company then you will also have to have the dog checked by a vet within 24 hours of travel to say it is fit to travel and you will need a Balai certificate. There are other posts on this certificate and how you get it but all the transporters I have used going Ireland to UK will sort that for you.
Hope that helps a bit. I would also advise phoning round for quotes on the passport, microchip and rabies injection because there can be a massive difference in what individual vets charge. Its not really as bad as it sounds but it is obviously an additional and in my opinion unnecessary expense.

Thank you Chris, any idea how long the rabies injection is valid for? Is it a year?

It lasts for 3 years so best to get done early then you will be ready for traveling.
