FOXES are friends, not foes.

Thats the message of campaigners fighting control measures targeting the European red fox.

The Greens have backed a campaign by Sydney Fox Rescue in protest of State Government legislation that makes rescuing or rehousing the red fox illegal.

The legislation includes pest control measures, including 1080 baiting, shooting and trapping.

Balmain state Greens MP Jamie Parker said the State Government was sending mixed messages about animal welfare.

It highlights some of the contradictions that people see from the Liberal (Party) when it comes to caring for animals, he said.

There are changes to protect (greyhound) dogs but on the other hand people cant even rescue an injured or orphaned fox.

Why wouldnt you allow someone to do that?

The European red fox was introduced to Australia in 1855 for recreational hunting.

The animal is recognised by the Department of Primary Industries as a serious threat to biodiversity that is estimated to cost the Australian economy $227.5 million each year.

The legislation does not affect the rehoming of red foxes prior to the laws coming into effect but prohibits any future rescue.

Sydney Fox Rescue shelter manager Charlie Jackson-Martin said attempts to negotiate the laws with the State Government had fallen flat.

They have refused to issue permits for foxes rescued after March 2015 or to allow the continued work of Sydney Fox Rescue, he said.

You name an inner west suburb and theres probably a fox been rescued in that area.

If we get a call tomorrow, and in the coming weeks we will get calls, it will now be illegal for us to rescue them.

We refuse to euthanase healthy, rehomable animals and we wont do it.

Mr Jackson-Martin said the State Governments laws were aimed at fighting the public perception of foxes as a friendly animal.

Theyre concerned if the public start to see foxes as an animal that deserves compassion they wont be able to kill them in a really awful, inhumane way, he said.

The Inner West Courier has contacted the department for comment.

DOZENS of university students have left their lab coats behind to expose the naked truth on greyhounds uncertain future.

More than 70 Sydney University veterinary science students have gone the Full Monty to raise awareness of the plight of greyhounds, which have been used as a political football by the Baird Government this year.

Its a long-held tradition for the fourth-year students to put out a calendar and the 2017 edition, Free Range Vets, has seen a record number of the animal welfare crusaders bare all to raise funds for Friends of the Hound, which supports adoption and not destruction.

Student Lucy Miller, of Mangrove Mountain, said the students were stunned on the second day of the photo shoot October 11 when Premier Mike Baird did a U-turn on his greyhound racing ban.

It was quite a blow when we heard it was overturned, Ms Miller, who features in the calendar with her 12-month-old kelpie Arrow and three fellow female students, said.

It was unexpected and shocked us. All of us are quite attached to greyhounds. They are beautiful animals and make great pets. All they want to do is sleep most of the day; they arent 60km/h speed machines racing around the house.

The students latest calendar was shot around paddocks in Camden where different furry friends and farm equipment were strategically and tastefully positioned around them.

It was a fun two days and after spending four years together, taking off our clothes was the next step, right? Ms Miller, a former Gosford High School student, said with a laugh.

One of the funniest moments was when Tony had 30-40 of us running naked towards a dam, but there was chaos when the dogs started chasing after the ducks into the water.

The past two calendars After Hours (2016) and Under the Overalls (2015) sold out after causing a stir with saucy photos. Last years edition raised $8275.
