The Ideal Greyhound from Edmund de Langley's Mayster of Game, AD 1370.
The Greihound should have a long hede and somedele grete, ymaked in the manner of a luce; a good large mouth and good sessours, the one again the other, so that the nether jaws passe not them above, ne that thei above passe not him neither. The neck should be grete and long, and bowed as a swanne's neck. Her shuldres as a roebuck; the for leggs streght and gret ynow, and nought to hind legges; the feet straught and round as a catte, and great cleas; the boones and the joynetes of the cheyne grete and hard as the chyne of an hert; the thighs great and squarred as an hare; the houghs steight, and not crompyng as of an oxe. A catte's tayle, making a ring at eend, but not to hie. Of all manere of Greihondes there byn both good and evel; Natheless the best hewe is rede falow, with a black moselle.

I found this many years ago
How to tell if you are into Greyhounds
You know you are into greyhounds when ... The kennel is cleaner than your kitchen. You remembered to vaccinate the pups, but forgot to feed the kids. Your idea of a day off is not having to clean out the dog yards. You only get to travel when a bitch comes into season. You asked for leads and collars for Christmas. Your house pet is a whippet or a greyhound. You have friends over for dinner and the conversation invariably turns to stools. Sleeping in means until 7am. Your personal cheques have a greyhound in the left corner. You dont even NOTICE the smells that seem to offend other people. You have 300 pedigrees committed to memory but forgot your Mums birthday .... again. You lay awake at night worried that you forgot to lock a gate. Every time you go into the house you have to scrape this "stuff" off your shoes. No matter how hard youve worked today, you havent caught up on what you should have done yesterday. And you wouldnt change a thing ... except maybe for that "stuff" on your shoes.

This one would resonate with many .

Simply The Best We are the black beauties, Part of the elite, Graceful, lithe, So fast on our padded feet.
Coats look so glorious, They gleam and shine, We are a vision, look so groomed, So fine.
Our bodies so muscular And so sleek, Kept by Romans, Egyptians, Even by the Greek.
Kept by you? Maybe, Who knows, we shall see, Will you win my heart, Be the one chosen by me?
Weve belonged to royalty in the past, Raced through history, we are never last. A breed changed so little from so long ago, Our popularity as pets continues to grow and grow.
We are loving and gentle, patient and loyal, Fairly lazy, not made for a day of hard toil, More suited to snoozing away hours of the day, Owning a black greyhound is great, nothing more to say.

The Spirit of a Greyhound
I was standing on a hillside In a field of blowing wheat And the spirit of a Greyhound Was lying at my feet. He looked at me with kind dark eyes Ancient wisdom shining through. In the essence of his being, I saw such love there too. His mind locked upon my heart As I stood there on that day. And he told me of this story About a place so far away. As I stood upon that hillside In a field of blowing wheat, In a twinkling of a second His spirit left my feet.
His tale put my heart at ease; All my fears did fade away About what lay ahead of me On another distant day. I live among Gods creatures now In the heavens of your mind. So do not grieve for me my friend, As I am with my kind. My Collar is a rainbows hue; My leash is a shooting star. My boundaries are the Milky Way Where I sparkle from afar.
There are no pens or kennels here For I am not confined. But Im free to roam Gods heavens Among the Greyhound kind. I nap the day on a snowy cloud Gentle breezes rocking me. And dream the dreams of earthlings, And how it used to be.
The trees are full of liver treats And tennis balls abound, And milk bones line the walkways Just waiting to be found. There is even a ring set up, The grass all lush and green; And everyone who gaits around Becomes the Best of Breed.
For were all winners in this place; We have no faults, you see. And God passes out those ribbons To each one, even me. I drink from waters laced with gold, My world a beauty to behold; And wise old dogs form my pride To amble at my side.
At night I sleep in an angels arms, Her wings protecting me, And moonbeams dance about us Just as stardust falls on thee. So when your life on earth is spent And you stand at Heavens gate, Have no fear of loneliness For here, you know, I wait.

I didn't really want you, I wasn't really sure, And I'll admit I had my doubts when you first came through that door Not small, or cute, or fluffy, with big soft puppy eyes, But tall and thin and bony, with bald pink bulging thighs You weren't the kind I had in mind, not in any way, Perhaps it would be better, if I took you back today, before we know each other, it really won't be kind, To keep you here for one more day and then to change my mind But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay and quickly I discovered, you were kind in every way. Your gentleness and patience really stole the show "Why! These dogs are wonderful, I must let others know" You're my gentle giant, Dispel our preconceptions, we come to know and love, what lies beneath that frame. And now I've come to understand, what I missed right at the start,
That Greyhounds need that great deep chest... To house their great big hearts.

Saying Good-Bye
Exchange day arrived and you came to my aid,
I was on a hauler, confused and afraid.
You checked my tattoos and got me real clean,
And pretty soon..I had the urge to lean.
You took my picture and looked in my ear,
Then softly whispered, You have nothing to fear.
You would be my handlers and also my friend,
You would love and care for me and help me to mend.
Im a retired greyhound who can no longer race,
But Im a gentle spirit you can see it in my face.
You taught me to sit and stay, to heel and more,
And sometimes how to walk on a real slippery floor.
We went on pack walks and played in the pen,
And you opened your heart and proved youre good men.
Ten weeks later it was time to go
I knew my commands and I learned all you know.
Its time to move to my forever home,
and soon to end this heartfelt poem.
So pack my bag, give me a hug and a kiss,
I hope I dont cry, but youll surely be missed.
My life will be different in my forever home,
I may have a playmate, a yard and a bone.
But Ill never forget you, no matter your crime.
Our souls are united..yours and mine!

GraciexJones Dec 2018 Brighton Beach Sitting on the beach on the coldest of days, Winter chills which skims across my face and hands, Watching the waves rising up and down, Beating against the shore, Roaring against the wind, The smell of open sea rises across the land,
Birds are fleeting above my head, Glimpse of the sun is peeking through the clouds, My partner is drawing characters in the sand, I run my hands over the seashells and tiny rocks, I explore a combination of sharp edges and wet stone,
A misty gloom appears along the coast, The sound of seagulls squarking and dogs barking echos in the distance,
My partner lights a cigarette and sits across me smiling, We hear the pitter-patter of a greyhound dog walking towards us, The greyhound greets us with a curious gesture, We welcome the dog with open arms and stroke their furry face to say hello The grey-hound pondering between us, Excitingly moving around, We hear the sound of people talking in the background, The grey-hound wonders off to accompany their owner,
A shift of temperature occurs in the atmosphere, I feel the cold cracking my lips, My partner begins to roll a spliff, I contemplate about the warmth, I propose we hit the Carrot Caf along our way, My partner agrees as he smokes his doobie We get up and set upon our next journey.

I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot; Follow your spirit: and upon this charge, Cry God for Harry! England and Saint George! William Shakespeare
Why not be oneself? That is the whole secret of a successful appearance. If one is a greyhound, why try to look like a Pekingese? Edith Sitwell
Ay, in the catalogue ye go for men; As hounds, and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs, Shoughs, water-rugs, and demi-wolves, are 'clept All by the name of dogs: the valued file Distinguishes the swift, the slow, the subtle, The housekeeper, the hunter, every one According to the gift which bounteous nature Hath in him closed. William Shakespeare

Greyhounds are the greatest friends of man, more than humans, in fact.
Greyhounds are such agreeable friends-they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms. Greyhounds have always found a special place in our hearts and love you more than you love yourself. It is our duty to treat all Greyhounds with love and protect them. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. We should know how to value a life because a life is a life whether in humans or in animals.

We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of his Greyhounds. Kevin Wright 2020.
Compassion for Greyhounds is intimately connected with goodness of character It may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to ANY greyhound cannot be a good man.
There is only one dangerous breed
HUMANS
You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his Greyhounds

A friend is a friend and a Greyhound is a Greyhound. A friend will never be a Greyhound , but a Greyhound won't ever quit being a friend.
Man is the Reasoning Animal. Such is the claim. I think it is open to dispute. Indeed, my experiments have proven to me that he is the Unreasoning Animal... In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived together in peace; even affectionately.
Next, in another cage I confined an Irish Catholic from Tipperary, and as soon as he seemed tame I added a Scotch Presbyterian from Aberdeen. Next a Turk from Constantinople; a Greek Christian from Crete; an Armenian; a Methodist from the wilds of Arkansas; a Buddhist from China; a Brahman from Benares. Finally, a Salvation Army Colonel from Wapping. Then I stayed away for two whole days. When I came back to note results, the cage of Higher Animals was all right, but in the other there was but a chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh--not a specimen left alive. These Reasoning Animals had disagreed on a theological detail and carried the matter to a Higher Court. Mark Twain,

One of the greatest gifts we receive from our Greyhounds is the tenderness they evoke in us. The disappointments of life, the injustices, the battering events that are beyond our control, and the betrayals we endure, from those we befriended and loved, can make us cynical and turn our hearts into flint on which only the matches of anger and bitterness can be struck into flame.
By their delight in being with us, the reliable sunniness of their disposition, the joy they bring to playtime, the curiosity with which they embrace each new experience, Greyhounds can melt cynicism, and sweeten the bitter heart.

A Greyhound doesnt care if youre rich or poor, smart or dumb. Give him your heartand hell give you his.
My goal in life is to become as wonderful as my Greyhound thinks I am
My Greyhound is usually pleased with what I do, because she is not infected with the concept of what I "should" be doing.
If I could be half the person my Greyhound is, Id be twice the human I am.
