i can work most of it out, but i'm going crazy trying to figure out what the * is behind some of the names. i'd appreciate if someone could let me in on what it means. (i searched all over the site and couldn't find any how-to on reading the pedigrees.)

Thank you!

eta - and why some dogs are in red?

Elizabeth,

Normally an * indicates that the dog has been physically imported from another country as opposed to (in the case of a male) having its semen imported.

As examples;

The reason some names are in red is it indicates that particular dog appears more than once as an ancestor in a greyhound's pedigree (see above links for examples).
