I have recently decided to get back into the greyhound industry as i used to be an owner trainer and it was a great thrill to participate in the sport and i have really missed it.

This time i will be racing but i am also applying for my breeding licence in NSW and would like to invest money into breeding some quality pups.

My concern is when i look on the pups for sale there are only 30 in all of Aus, when i left the industry when the ban came in there were lots of pups for sale.

My questions are
What has happened?

Have the new breeding regulations really forced that many people to stop breeding or is it something else?

Is it worth investing money in to it, will i even be able to sell the pups?

some of the pups for sale on there at the moment are decent pups for reasonable prices, i am just not sure what is going on.

would love to be involved again as i love greyhounds and the industry but obviously worried.
If any breeders or anyone with knowledge of what is going on could please help answer my questions

Hi David.
Firstly good on you for getting back in.
To quote you - " i used to be an owner trainer and it was a great thrill to participate in the sport and i have really missed it."
Well, unless everyone pulls together and creates a demand for fairness, that could well be the catch cry for all participants in about 10 years time.
So, you have some time to enjoy.
I'll try my best to give you my opinion...

Q1. What has happened?

A. 2015.

Q2. Have the new breeding regulations really forced that many people to stop breeding or is it something else?

A. Complex...An array of regulations implemented already with the promise of more to come. Some warranted, some aren't.
Some of the 'something eles' include increasing costs V decreasing prize monies.
Negativity both internally and externally.
The failure of Authorities and industry Representatives to promote and protect the industry which leaves most participants in doubt of honour.
The constant barrage of antis propaganda and some Governments willingness to align with them.
Etc, etc, etc...
All of the above equates to a LACK OF CONFIDENCE.

Q3. Is it worth investing money in to it, will i even be able to sell the pups?

A. The lack of confidence has caused massive reductions in breeding, therefore a shortage in pups for sale.
If you breed good quality pups that are priced realistically, I'm certain you will have NO problem selling them.
There are many examples that I have heard of just recently where people have sold all pups VERY quickly.
All were well bred and reasonably priced.

David, the world keeps turning and life goes on...
No doubt it is a hard slog and the industry might not look the same in the near future, however, there is enjoyment to be had and if Greyhounds is what you enjoy, then NO B@STARD should stand in your way.

Breed, sell a couple, keep a couple, and ENJOY!
