I was looking through the heats of the Irish oaks this morning to try and get an angle on Sires that throw good bitches having read the recent post about Razldazl Billy and being very interested in breeding.
I was amazed to discover that out of the 13 heats comprising of 78 bitches there were a staggering 41 different sires that had been used. There were 24 sires with only 1 bitch with Laughill Blake being the most prolific with 6.
I'm not sure if there is any significance to this but it does seem to indicate to me that there are not very many outstanding sires and that getting the right breeding and character traits to suit your bitch should be the main priority.

I think it reflects the huge expansion of the gene pool in modern day breeding. We used to have a limited number of track sires and the only option was to outcross to coursing lines. I remember when Sand Man was introduced from the US and he had a phenomenal influence on invigorating track lines. These days there is access to US, Aus, Irish and UK sires not to mention those that have been dead for God knows how long.
