I've raised this on another forum, but am hoping to get some replies from our overseas counterparts.
I do not mean your fastest dog,or the dog with the most potential.
I mean the dog that actually earnt you money.
Who sired your BEST dog and how much was the stud fee?
If applicable, how much did the pup cost?
How did the sires fee compare to other studs at the time.
The reason i raise this is due to the huge fees currently being asked for our top studs.
My belief is that only the cream of broods produce the vast majority of top pups,so are the 99% of us who do not own such a bitch simply wasting money by using the highest priced sires?
Scott.

Richard, what year would that have been?
I would imagine that everybody on here would be able to answer the questions i've raised,so is it hitting a nerve with those of us who are using the highest priced dogs??????
Scott.

Actually we don't race for house paint. We race for nothing. Winning the paint was a huuuuge bonus. Also, I won half a sheep ... twice. Then there was the biggest price ever, a R500 gift voucher at a hardware store. You guys should try it. You may like it.

For a £40 stud fee,to Lyons Monk, we bred the French and European Derby Winner- I think the name was Johna Winnie Gold.
Ratify was £150 and produced a litter of 11, one of which was injured, the other 10 all won open races of various standards, including, I think 4 track records.
Bonus Prince was £150, but we made the stud keeper a set of traps- that mating produced Almost Deadly, dog of the year Enniscorthy 2002 and multiple open stake winner.
Johannestown cash, was, I think, £300 stud fee and produced one dog who fetched 30,000 after his first race and two more who topped the Sales.
We've just spent €5,500 pre-booking a service to Brett Lee and now that I see what Ive written in this post,Ive just realised we are mad!!

Billy Binjang, Red Flag & Malawi. All could be classed as bargain sires IMHO.

Kyle Jack

CLICK HERE

CLICK HERE Although this dog was a good few lengths faster but exceptionally injury prone after a bad accident. The fastest dog I ever had a lead on and am ever likely too.

If I can remember correctly Kyle Jack was around the £700 mark at the time. The dearest stud dog at that time was the immortal Im Slippy. There was a group around the £600/£700 mark that were all top class sires. Daleys Gold etc.

My best dog was by a $300 sire. Yet my pup won $13000 and 13 races, and made numerous major race finals. Hardly surprising considering his mother was a litter sister to a group one winner. The breeders had trouble selling the pups. Seems people were worried whether a virtually unknown sire could throw good pups, even though he was a consistent open class performer. I bought the pup for $275.

There is huge variation between the best and worst brood bitches. However, among the sires they normally have to reach at least a fairly high standard to be standing. So it is among the females that there is more variation in quality. Threfore it is the female that is likely the greatest source of variability in quality between litters. So my theory is that the sire is not the most important thing to look at; check the dam and her pedigree, performance etc. first.

The fastest I ever owned, Dog was a repeat mating by You Genuis to Milwaukee Lady his Stud fee was approx one third to one quarter of the cost of the top stud dogs at the time at 250 Sterling. I was looking for a similar cross as I'm Slippy (her Half brother) and as Laurdella Fun was dead I went for the best bred Supreme fun dog so as You Genuis was Supreme Fun out of Skipping Chick there could be no better.
The Fastest bitch I have ever owned is by my own Mineola Subby and she is by Mineola Farloe which is no cost to me but is 700 euro. The next two I would rate as equal Seven by Top Honcho and Mineola Precious by Staplers Jo.

It's showing my age but my best racer was a bitch by Gambling Fever (who was a brother of the great Sand Man) although he was nowhere near as popular at stud.

She was named Special Sally and cost £900 at Shelbourne sales.
Sally won three big open sweepstakes including the Cock o' The North, was second in the Catford Gold Cup and the Scottish St. Leger and won the Belle Vue Stayers Championship by fourteen lengths.

She went to the two top studs of the time (I'm Slippy and Daleys Gold) but never produce any thing of note.

Ah Well, never mind.
