Gee there are some classy brood bitches available in the Greyhound Data Classifieds section at the moment. Is it a sign of the times, that breeding is on the wane again?

I noticed the same thing, a couple of group level 500m+ bitches have been available over the last month or so.

I wonder if it has anything to do with pups taking so long to sell and the abundance of giveaways and young dogs?

It definately goes in cycles from what I have seen even in my short time in the industry!

A lot of these well bred or classy broodies have already had 2 litters or are getting a little bit on in age. Majority are unfortunately moving them on because rehoming is so difficult

Interesting observation. There might be more than a grain of truth in that comment.

Thats right, and/or not the goldmine they thought they would be and then also unwilling to provide a home for them for the last 7 years or so of their life, all under the premise of 'here is your big chance' LOL

Some of the broodies advertised 100% went to the wrong sires and could probably produce still. But I agree, if you decide to keep a broodie it's a commitment until they pass away at 12+yo (barring extenuating circumstances obviously), not oh no she's 7 I'll try to palm her off

....and I know someone who picked up a broodie, had a litter with her at almost 9 yoa - one of the pups in the litter won almost $250k

It's called good judgment.

Almost impossible to breed with a bitch over 8 now. Unless they have been super successful in her first couple of litters. I wonder if there is some sort criteria they have to meet before being approved for litters after 8 years of age.

I remember it being

80% of all pups of racing age named

60% of those pups must be winners

Seems like a rather arbitory criteria. What if she has a small litter? So a bitch produces 5 pups, 3 win a maiden only in NSW Country and she can have another litter? Another bitch produces a 2 pup litter one is a superstar and the other is injured as as a pup, she is deemed illegible to breed again? I have to admit I'm not overly surprised.

I've only just come back from a break from the dogs. I can't believe the bureaucracy and red tape you have to wade through to regain a licence. I do understand it's for welfare reasons, but boy things have changed.

I recall that's the reason Steve Martin has stopped breeding. He told me the circumstances he was stopped from breeding a 3rd litter with his bitch and it was completely ridiculous.

Three times in the last week I've been offered real quality broods to look after. If I had the room I'd take all three. It must be a sign of the times.

I am pretty sure if you can prove there are circumstances that prevent a bitch's pup figures are affected by these factors they would be willing to listen as long as she checked out well with the vet etc

It seems that the older cohort of breeders are affronted by having their freedom to breed at will removed, even though they may be proven responsible breeders over the years

Its hard to change, but given the amount of breeding and the rehoming issues surrounding the sport I can see why restrictions are placed and possibly getting stricter

Honestly I've never heard of a broodie being knocked back for a 4th litter. Authorities know no one is gonna breed a 8yo a 4th time if her litters at 4, 5 and 6yo are hopeless

Don't quote me, but I believe you void a return serve on a straw with many lead sires if the Bitch will whelp down after she is 9 years if she was to miss.
