Being that Sargent Major is still the joint record holder over the 725 meter trip at the Meadows with Mantra Lad with a time of 42.28 and as we all know Sargent Major is also a group 1 winner. Does anybody know if he has sired any pups.

CLICK HERE 1d, 3b 28/6/2009 Interesting cross. I'd like to see more by him - it's a pity stayers don't get as many opportunities at stud.

It looks like breeders stay away from staying sires until they can be proven by somebody else. Unless the sire has immediate success with limited oppurtinities they will struggle to get pups on the ground and of course bitches. I can now understand why dogs like Malfoy are sold to overseas interests if the owners receive a decent offer.

She was a sister to a very good dog in Wildly Contented.....I agree Tom, it's an interesting mating

Hopefuylly, dogs like Malfoy, Mantra Lad, Miagi & to some extent Texas Gold can entice breeders to use more stayers as options for their bitches to throw some strength in for city racing

Does anyone know if he's sired any pups yet?

He comes from Sydney Gem's damline tracing back to Sheila At Last

Maybe a way for the staying sires to be used is some breeders incentive scheme to be offered by all greyhound authorities around Australia. I know they struggle to get nominations for staying races in Victoria. Personally speaking . You put the dog over the 500 hundreds first and if they are no good then there only hope is if they can stay. All the horse trainers are up in arms about scheduling more staying races. There is talk about reducing the Victoria derby to 2000 meters to get better quality participants. If you do not look after the breeders and the trainers and help them with some industry insetives these great dogs will be under utilised in the breeding barn and eventually there blood lines lost forever.

Totally agree Con

I think there has to be a fair balance between the 3 two extremes of racing i.e short course and stayers

The main racing is done in the 450-550 range

Anything outside of those should be apportioned equally but adjusted for age factors i.e. a lot of younger dogs usually start in sub 450m.....where the imbalance lies is when dogs progress as they get older and there are fewer and fewer 550m+ races & an absolute dearth of 700m races around

But to be fair, there seem to be more 700m races around than there used to be say 3 or 4 years ago

SM was also a quality sprinter, leading all the way in a number of races and he also won a final in track record time at Nowra over the 600m.
deserveds a chance imo
