I had a dog race on 15th March 2014, stewards reported him having a check, no problem, the dog was called in to the vet, again no problem. However, we waited some 30 minutes, standing around, in order for the vet to check him. I complained that we had missed the feature race and he had said well we could just wait till he was ready. This is not the first time that this particular vet has displayed his authority over myself. Anyway, to cut a long story short he gave the dog 28days. Had the dog checked by a local vet .. to which the vet said .. take the dog away, there is nothing wrong with it. Last week the dog was driven some 1,300 klm to Sydney and rechecked by one of the top greyhound vets .. again nothing wrong !!! I have since been advised that, in QLD, the longest suspension a vet can give is 14days unless there is a fracture or break.. Can someone advise please. Ok, someone will probably say go to the board and have the 28 days repealed with another vet certificate .. if I do, I can probably guarantee that every time any of my dogs go over the table with this vet it will get scratched or suspended :-(

One particular famous vet at dapto wasnt happy with a cut on my dogs back leg which had been checked by brian daniels and told it was nothing but let it scab over.So like alot of greyhound owners i gave him one week more time off than what Brian actually said ,upon putting the dog over the table i proceeded to point the old wound out but assured her it was well healed but would be weeks to completely show no sign of ever being there. She told me she wasnt happy with it which is fair enough but she would check it again before the race .She peeled the scab off and as wounds do it started bleeding by race 6 there was bit off blood coming out which you would expect and she scratched me on the way to the boxes.I had a dog in the 8 and i walked back put my dog in the car and scratched my other dog and all hell broke loose.I still to this day believe it was because i mentioned Brian daniels name and she did it in spite and i got caught up with the current politics of the time.Unbeknown to me he was getting the top job from Ted and he was giving her the flick and i dropped his name. The steward at the time agreed with me but said no body can argue with the vets.

I would think a dropped muscle, torn hip or dislocated toe or season will get you 28 days anywhere.
At what track did your incident happen, you have told all details except that.
What did your 28 days suspension say it was for on the certificate he gave you, what was the injury he put you out for.
Couldn't you have applied for an abridgement of time.

Ok, car has 'papers' in it, car at smash repair shop ... Not dropped muscle, torn hip or dislocated toe ... season for the dog, well don't think so, he has two of those funny things immediately between his rear legs :-) Ahhhh .. hubby has paperwork ...
This is on paperwork .....................
Reason .. Incident or injury
Clinical findings .. Yes
this being ............
Musculoskeletal ... Not Lame .. RH .. tarsal fracture or sprain
Time of examination .. Post race
Did dog complete race .. Yes
Was the dog sampled .. No
Was the dog treated .. No

One begs that if we have a tarsal fracture/sprain the dog is as the vet has said, not lame, and quite happily jumped into the back of the station wagon, and out when we got home (130 klms) and danced around the garden at home (we have just under half a acre that the dogs play in)

Yes, we could have got an abridgement, and the head steward said we could go to another vet and get another opinion .. but, small country tracks and small country vets will discriminate !!! Like I said before, I suspect that should I have come up with the documentation every time I put mine or another owner's dog over the table he will find a problem. So, am trying to think outside the square ????

I have had the reverse happen.
Dog vetted ,nothing obviously wrong at time. got him home ,he looked ok ,but sour.
Good look over him, tore his hip support out.
Serious injury
Totally missed at track.
Two ways to go for you I suppose.
Bow your head and follow as they want OR point out the miss diagnosis of your dog ( show your other vets results to your chief steward and track vet) and maybe he might get a wake up call and be a bit more professional with his position ,not only with your dogs but others to.

One pre race swab, filling in paperwork, washing his hands, washing his pre race swab bowl ..... just generally doing everything slowwwwwwly, I know the vet is getting on in years, but that was just too stupid ...

A quick Google on the date provided by you obviously refers to the greyhound AMAZING FEET which was in race 6 at Bundaberg.

A Post-race-Swab was done in the next race on the greyhound EL GALO GIRL, as you have stated so a little patient maybe required while this task is performed....But I wasn't there so I'm only presuming that.

Is old Anthony the vet is still there Marie ?

Ah ... post race swabs are not done until after 1 hour after the end of a race ... one of my bitches had to wait till after 5pm, so that night we didn't get home till after 6.30 ...
Yes, there is a mature Vet at the track !!!!!
And, no we don't use him ......
Use David out at Tinana, even El Galo Girl's trainer has used him ...

True Marie...My mistake. The Swab you refer to was one of the earlier one.

Your dog in question finished last, 18 lengths behind the winner & 12 1/4 lengths behind the 2nd last dog....so I gather the Steward in charge was concerned with the performance.

The vet stated in his report - Injured in running, off side hock, 28 days.

Were you happy with the dogs performance ?

Hi
Still going I see.
Did you trial the dog since the 15 th
And if so when and how has it gone.
Might be as good an indication of what its all about

Yes Steve, still going, ....
Yes, it went up the straight on the 18th .......... no probs ...
it was not trialled the following week, as I said the dog went to Sydney and was vet checked there .. This dog danced around the back garden when we got home,
anyway, think this should be laid to rest now .. aired my views with the head steward yesterday and made it quite clear that should I or my husband have a dog put over the table before the races and scratched, or after a race and penalised unfairly, (dogs yesterday were given 10 days ..... ) I will take the vet's decision further.
I might add that my husband has been in dogs for over 50 years, and myself for over 30, we've had winners in Sydney, we've had the same bitch be Greyhound of the Year two years running, and I've been top female trainer, at our height we had over 40 dogs .... so, I think we've some idea of if our dog/s are unfit or hurt.
Thank you everyone for both joining in the conversation, and those viewing this for your interest.
