I have a 17 month old pup. He's had 3 handslips and been twice in the sprint boxes.
4 days after his last sprint he started acting lethargic so he went to the vets who did a urine sample and sent him home.Couple of days later his hocks were all swollen and his front feet.he was sore wherever you touched him and the weight has dropped off almost overnight.Went back to vets where he was put on a drip for 2 days and had blood tests done. They don't seem to be able to find the cause.Hes eating still but just picking at it instead of gulping it down like he used to.Does this sound like a bad case of acidosis?.hes lost about 4 kgs in weight. He was a big 35 kgs dog so we don't understand that the trial has done this alone.Could he have had a virus and the trial have tipped him over the top?Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Maureen
It sounds like this is what he has he also had a high temperature and the muscle wastage is unbelievable.I can't see if it says to leave him on his bed for total rest or give him gentle walks to build him up again

I'd also consider juvenile polyarthritis . There are various theories for it's cause from autoimmune disease to joint infection but it comes on suddenly in young dogs .
I had a pup with it , I discovered it laying on it's bed one morning and it screamed when I tried to touch it . We got it to the vet on a makeshift stretcher .
It had a high temperature and several very painful joints . The vet injected it with a high dose of antibiotics and steroids and gave me tablets of both to continue treatment .
By the afternoon the temp was reducing and the pup was sitting up and taking notice of it's surroundings again .
By the next day it was walking about and eating ok . It made a full recovery

I also had a dog with Polyarthritis and the symptoms were very similar.

The weight loss concerns me though. I had a similar thing with another dog that had hit a fence and unbeknownst to me had fractured a rib. Lost weight very rapidly, lost 8 lengths and just seemed unhappy.
Took 2-3 different types of antibiotics to find one that cured the bone infection and a few weeks later he was as good as rain.

what was the time span of the 3 hand slips and twice in the sprint boxes? and what was his fitness level before these?

found before that when having a dog off for a while and maybe pushing him a bit to get back into fitness they can suffer from a mild form of Rhabdomyolysis which may need a steriod injection at the vets to get back to full health.

Hi Robert
After each handslips he had a couple of weeks off and same for sprint trials. We never rush our pups. When he was about 14 months old all his litter got sick(8 in litter) except him.Hes always been flying to the knock off.He gets a long walk every day and gets to play with football on our gallop at home for some fun time so he's not unfit. The pain seems to be subsiding as he can now give himself a shake without crying and yesterday he eat 2 meals plus his brekky.Still looks terribly thin but seems happier than he has been.

Hi Marc, sounds very similar to what one of ours had and the vet gave him a cortisone injection and he picked up in a couple of days, down side is you can't run them under license for 60 days.

try giving him half an asprin for a couple of days.

I had one exactly the same last month Marc, after coursing a Hare for roughly 30 secs he seemed fine. After 4 days the weight started to drop off him and he was still eating! Took him to the vet and he gave him a steroid injection and 2 days later the weight was going back on, guess it was cortisone. The vet called it a fancy name and basically if you dont treat it right the Kidney function (it blocks the filters) does not work properly and obviously they go down hill very quickly. If in doubt take him to another vet...Good luck
