I'd be getting a blood test done and at the same time get the vet to check the tonsils if you can't.

I'm guessing, but its possible he has been cooked when young.
Blood test will tell you

Vera, we had a pup that had chronic tonsillitis from a very young age, and used to do the same as yours. He had several courses of antibiotics to control it, but we had to get them out when he was older, as the infection kept recurring, and they were really affecting him, and they were huge. Make sure that you go to a good greyhound vet, though. Good luck.

Kathryn, get a vet to check his tonsils, and you can also feel the glands under, and at the back of, his lower jaw. There is one on each side, and they get very large when there is an infection. You can check the tonsils yourself if he will let you do it, but some dogs resent their mouth being looked at.
Antibiotics will clear them up for a short time, but tonsillitis always seems to recur, so getting them out really benefits the dog, and his form, if it is recurring. Good luck.

Kathryn, it won't wreck him, and it would be a good idea as they are obviously bothering him. You may need to just check his blood before you put him back into work, as sometimes the readings drop after the operation. Also, you have to be careful which vet you choose, as greyhounds have different anaesthetic requirements to other breeds, as they carry little body fat, as you would know. A lot of vets use lasers now for tonsil ops, so they won't be out of work for so long.
We have had plenty that have had their tonsils out, and they are usually back in full work by six weeks afterwards, but they were nearly all done by manual cutting, not laser.

My bet is that you will end up getting the tonsils out, Kathryn.
We had a dog that had similar symptoms. He had several lots of antibiotics, but his tonsillitis recurred. We took him to the vet, who said that there was nothing wrong with his tonsils. However, we insisted that we wanted them removed, and when we picked him up after the op, the vet said that they were some of the worst tonsils he had seen, as far as infection went. The dog improved heaps afterwards. Let us know the final result, will you ?
