The back legs are the last to develope. He is only 15 mnths ,free galloping and handslips up the straight and by 2 years old you will be wondering what you were worried about.

Simon, also get his lower back checked by a good muscleman, as if he has a problem here, he won't be using his back end as strongly as he should, and it would take longer for the muscles to build up.

Don't panic Simon your pup is still in its developmental stage of his life. Be patient my friend & delay breaking him 4 bit longer & allow him to mature a bit more. I believe many people break in their youngsters & start racing them far to early & that's why they are prone to breaking down far to often & they don't last very long at all. We don,t break in our k9's until they are at least 17mths old & don't race them until around the 22mths of age area. That way you don't burn em out & have em on the scrapheap by 3 yrs old like so many I see these days. Also using a quality Amino Acid supplement could help build his muscle tone as Amino Acids are the building blocks from which protein is made & protein builds muscle in conjuction with a top quality diet & well programmed exercise & galloping program you should see quite an improvement in his overall muscle tone & development. PATIENCE MY FRIEND !

Simon go down to woollies and buy yourself some lamb offcuts feed him around about 600g a day and seer it a little on the grill or in a frypan about a minute or 2 both sides add your 150g of beef or chicken or whatever you feed lamb fat is the best give him a cup and 3/4's of kibble with veges everyday and weight will be guaranteed ...another thing if you stand behind your pup and his shoulders are uniform all the way down his back especially over the kidneys to his hips with no ribs or hip bones showing then very little wrong with your pup you don't need a good eye for it

Also, IS THE K9 already broken in ? So Carole & John are correct. make 100% certain your k9 has been thoroughly checked over by a reputable muscleman. As he could have skeletal displacements in his neck , back & lower hindquarters + possible pelvic fracture , metatarsal issues etc etc. So get him looked at 1st & make sure all is ok. If all is ok just give him more time to grow & mature , feed & exercise him on well mapped out prep program. DON'T PUSH HIM TO HARD TO EARLY & REMAIN PATIENT !

Hi Steve,
Dog is broken in. He is very big in the front shoulders as is the rest of the litter.

Maybe I am a little impatient, as I own both sire and dam.

Have had him checked. He was a little tender in the lower back.

Any recommendations on amino acids ?????

Back legs will come i wouldnt worry about any supplements just free galloping and a straight run behind the lure every week or so.Steve is right about the pelvic fracture this will retard growth in the back legs. But not likely so get him checked and condition the dog AWAY from the circle for a few mnths.

Make sure his lower back & hindquarters are completely 100% sound before you start prepping him. He is only 15mths old, still a baby & still in his development stage of life cycle. Just take it easy on him until he's around 18-19mths old & let him grow & mature properly as rushing & working him to hard to early , he'll be prone to injuries as he hasn't grown properly yet.Once he's 18mths old you can step up his conditioning work a bit more. Start free galloping him very regularly 10-15mins each morning , start slipping him around 300mts up the straight without the lure I use a squeaker every 3rd day for about 4wks in conjuction with the free galloping + a bit of roadwalking 1.5kms max on the days you don't gallop him. that should improve his condition fairly quickly. Feed him the best racing diet you can afford , I prefer top quality fresh beef , the extra $'s is well worth it as the solid foundation from my experiences. I also feed EUKANUBA PREMIUM PERFORMANCE KIBBLE IN his tea about 1 mug for a 30kg k9 but be careful its great but expensive + puts on weight on a k9 real quick so regulate his EUKANUBA volume to match his workload & weigh him every 2nd day to see what his weight is doing as you may have to adjust it accordingly. As for Amino Acid suppliments I have used RAPIDVITE AMINO GB with good results but don't overdo it if you are feeding EUKANUBA, about 1/2 a teaspoon each night is plenty , also supplement his tea with 10gms of CALCI-D EVERY NIGHT WITHOUT FAIL ! I also have used 1/3rd of a teaspoon of CREATINE MONOHYDRATE & 1/3RD of a teaspoon of GLUTAMINE "USN" is a great cheap brand to use & that builds good muscle size & tone + assists with their recovery greatly I have used those with impressive results in their b/fast every morning with their 100-200iu of WHITE-E with SELENIUM. after all that early prep he should be ready to start trialling but start off over the "shorts" then gradually build him up slowly. I never trial a k9 at the same track 2 runs in a row , so mix it up a bit on him as I guarantee that will keep him interested in his work + won't "brown off" from to much of the same thing.retain variety in his work will keep him keen + the experience of going around different tracks will definitely make him more versatile k9. Also grate up 1/2 a carrot in his tea as well , keep him clean ,spotless, healthy + aid digestion inside + no need to bile him out every 4-6wks doing that. I hope this advice may help you produce a nice race k9 when he,s ready. PATIENCE !

Thats why breaking them in over a couple of months and after 15 mnths old it stops the temptation of doing topo much with them, considering they wont race till 20mnths or there abouts its a long time in work. But free galloping and the odd slip up the straight shouldnt worry him.Patience is the key.

Have you put him behind the lure over the 270mts at keinbah ? Whats he running now or are you just slipping him with a squeaker or whistling him up ?

Take him out to REDHEAD & LET him watch some trials 6-7 behind the drag & see how he reacts to seeing a drag lure for the 1st time. If he seems real keen & interested give him a slip next to the 270mt boxes. a much easier run than keinbah 270mts + something a bit different. I bet he'll go up sweetly ! They trial TUES.THURS.SAT SUN MORNS + ONLY $3 A TRIAL ! TELL clocker old JACK MAHER all the HARVEY FAMILY SAYS HI. HE'S A GREAT OLD TIMER !
