Newcastle had their chance when the Old Beaumont Park closed to build a track inside the Harness Track at Newcastle.
At the time i had just had a stint training in Melb and this practice was in use at Cranbourne ,Warragul and other joint ventures like Taralagon,Sale i think etc and most had licensed clubs and facilities that were far superior than our local tracks.
The Newcastle Track was well positioned next to the Knights and Jets stadium,a stones throw from the entertainment and show ground,10 mins from the CBD and central to bus and train routes.
I thought it would have been a shoe in.
The powers decided to build a track on swamp lands in a residential area with not enough space to swing a cat.
Now having grown up in the next suburb we used the current Gardens venue playing Football when it was originally known as Australs Soccer Club back in the 60 s
One thing all us kids hated was the Mosquito plauges every training night and cancellation of games when it rained whilst every other ground was on.Austral Soccer Club had a proud tradition going back to the 40s loads of junior teams but by the end of 1980 folded due to lack of numbers location and bloody mosquitos.
Every business venture at the premises for as long as i can remember has gone bust or got out before they did .The area has a good range of friendly Pubs that the locals prefer and it is way out of range on the public transport agenda.
Basically it never had anything going for it since i can remember.
Personally i know the locals and most novocastrians have been shunning the location since the 60 s no matter what sport or organisation was running the joint and there has been some.
Its Greyhound Racing turn for the Austral Park Kiss of Death.
