Does anyone on here have race dogs that suffer from acid reflux at all ?

We have ALWAYS had problems with one of our pups Friday's eating / not eating / weight fluctuations / blah blah - DRAMAS DRAMAS DRAMAS- for so long !

She gets sick on and off through the week , throwing up, biling herself out etc and eating grass madly.

I was thinking it had to be her tonsils we are at wits end she is over 2 years of age and has not raced yet.

Took her to a vet today and he suggested I try antacids (Zantac) , and she actually ate her entire dinner and didn't yap to go out earlier than normal.

I am SO hoping this is her answer as she broke in quickest of the litter.
If anyone can help with suggestions of what to use that will not swab can you please answer me on here or email me at
[email protected]
thank you,

Robynne

Robynne

Can only talk from my own personal expierence and not from any expierence with a dog so draw your own conclusions.

3 years ago gor really bad heart burn persisted for weeks went to the doctor who prescribed nexium tablets kind workedfor a while but came back again this time around the tablets did not work, i was suffering severe heart burn could not sleep at night the doctor had no further solutions only mentioned some sort of a band at the end of my esophagus....

i looked for a natural treatment and to my supprise apple cider vinegar was put forward as the solution...... despertae to try anything i started on th ACV within 3 days i was cured i sipon it every day now and am fine.

The thinking behind it is that you are not producing enough acid and your osophahus open letting the acid up... compared to modern day medicne which thinks your stomach is producing to much.. anyway it worked for me would be keen to know how you get on if tried on a dog..

Use of Zantac in a racer would most likely result in a positive swab would be my guess.

Sorry if you thought I was being a smart ass, that was not my intention.

Slippery Elm is widely used and highly recommended by those in the "alternative" medicine field such as Naturopaths and Herbalists etc, however as to it's efficacy in greyhounds I don't know, certainly assists in humans.

I suffered from stomach ulcers for 3 years and lived on Zantac.

Went to a different doctor who said reflux is caused by a bug in the stomach.
He put me on a 21 day course of strong antibiotics which killed the bug in my stomach and never had a problem since.

i agree with Micheal Kealy regarding the apple cider vinegar
i suffered with same problem for many years
my esophagus would leak stomach acid
back into my lungs i would wake up gasping for air with a horrible burning sensation in my throat and chronic heartburn
i tried almost every thing available to ease it nothing really worked
until the operation Nissen fundoplication
been good for 12 + years
i never tried apple cider vinegar for it though
but was recommended to give it to my dog which was eating grass, vommitimg and had diarrhea within a few days he was ok
i give him two cap fulls with his main meal every day
and he has been very good since
