Philip, one of our dogs had a bite a few years back, vet treated, and came back just as good.
Carol may be right.

I had a good race dog bitten by a red back spider, dog just survived. Vet who treated dog said lucky it wasn't a white tail spider coz most dogs never fully recover. My dog raced until five years of age 84 races Blood test is a must for your dog

I had one that was treated. Took about six weeks to resume and he did it in style winning at Ballarat 390 in 22.36 best. Before we found it he had run four 8ths in a row. He was bitten on the head just above his eye. All dogs will react differently pending their size, bit size etc. As others have said "Blood Test" if you have not done it.
Good Luck

Is the vet a greyhound vet? and would it be possible to speak with the trainers of the success stories? Was the blood count done at the time of the bite and has one been done since? If his bloods are ok then it will be a mystery. Where was the dog bitten, was that identified? So many variables I know.
Once again good luck.

I agree with Charles. Was it a greyhound vet, and have you had a blood test done lately ? Some pet vets work on a different scale of normal readings, which have no relevance to a greyhound's blood. Do you remember what the haemoglobin and PCV/haematocrit readings are? You also didn't say whether you have had the dog thoroughly checked over for any injuries/soreness.

Phillip, did they do a breakdown of the white cells into the components ? Pcv is lower than normal,( red cells are down ), and the HB could be a bit higher. Ideal PCV is 58-60, HB 19.5-20. Any lower, then the dog will not run out its races strongly, as anaemia is present.

Phillip, is there also a percentage reading for the neutrophils and lymphocytes ? They usually do that straight after the actual figures. Do you also have an eosinophil result after those readings ?

G'day Phillip, Are u sure it was a white tail-red backs poison can stay in humans systems for up to 15 mths. You get sores like pimples that finish on upper legs-when they are gone poison is gone.

Hi Grant my vet is sure it was a white tailed spider as the bite left an ulcerated sore were he was bitten which caused his hair to fall of most of his leg

Yep, white tail. My little dog is black and where he was bitten the hairs are now white, that was 2 years ago.
