Im am very wary of the toxic effects of commercial spot on flea controls ie advantix, advantage ,frontline etc and also comfortis and endgaurd type products !

My question is if you had to use one ....what do people think is the most beningn yet still very effective treatment that they are comfortable using on their hounds?

I am using a few natural remedies coupled with swimming , as I am concerned with liver and kidney toxicity ...but this may not be enough to get me thru summer mths so keen to hear peoples thoughts ???

I have been told endgaurd is good and atm im leaning towards comfortis !

Did you notice a greyhound failed to complete the course the other day in qld , upon being vetted a paralysis tick was found .
Dont know where your situated but the flea treatment is probably the go , i use advantage but you only need 2 amplets for 3 dogs not one each dog .

thanks Larry ..yeah mate im well across getting the most out of the products ...allways buy the ex large dog one and split etc etc share it around ..when on a product you can stretch it to six week applications as well .Also search the net thoroughly as the price differences can be quite amazing if u hunt hard !

I just don't trust them that they are as benign as the chemical co's make out and I don't like putting stuff on my race dogs especially that could be doing them harm ...or impacting there performance.

I have a collie rough so im well across the tick problems...I got him on endgaurd which kills ticks n fleas for 4 weeks which is one of the more effective ones ie not many do ticks n fleas for 4 weeks !
Im hoping some learned vet type person on here can give me the merits and methods these products use and give there opinion on the safer ones ?

The trainer lives in the northern rivers and is very vigilant and thorough with his dogs. Proof that anything can slip through!

You know jack ..I don't reckon any of em are !!!

You go looking on the net and type a product in with the word toxicity or similar and there are horror stories everywhere !!!

Most pet dogs get away with it and if they feeling a little off or being slowly poisened most people wouldnt notice.

But when u want an elite athlete trained to the minute to perform at its best or you are trying to raise pups and juveniles to go on to give there best ...are these things really a good idea? im thinking liver and nervous system damage etc etc

Maybe my question should be whats every one doing for fleas ?

There would probably be some innovative answers ?

Agree David - it worries me but so do fleas as they spread worms and drive dogs nuts. I tried alot of natural remedies but they didn't work. I'd also be interested in a safe, reliable remedy that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Mallet is the go. Same as Advantage and confidor. For 1ltr I payed I think $80. I bought it from CRT. Worked wonders for me and I have a very sandy yard.

Thank you very much Andrew for sharing that ...I just had a cursory reading of their site...and I find it very interesting will check it all out thoroughly tomoz.

I am using one of those ingredients in an all natural flea powder im just using in their kennels and bedding which I purchased from the states .

It seems there are some alternatives out there and you can get it at crt .

Im suss as all f... on all the big chemical co products ...you just know they are telling you lies and covering up all the adverse reactions!!!
ty again

I mix 1 ml mallet 1 ml water and apply like a spot on.(adult dogs). Capstar from Coles is tops. Starts working almost straight away. Doesn't last like the other stuff tho. I haven't noticed any side effects from either products.

IF you can't get Mallet try spectrom 200 same stuff as acvantage (imidacloprid) local (bacchus marsh) stockshop has it for 50 bucks for 1 litre i mix 20 mm to a litre of water and lightly spray the dogs all over
If you have fleas comming back very quickly say one or two weeks then you may need to treat the kennel area also has allways worked well for me
and certainly better than paying 15 bucks for 2mm of the same stuff in advantage
