Wondering if anyone can help:
Have a 16 month old pup who has injured her front left foot, second toe from the outside. Have had it x-rayed and vet says no break or fracture. Have been treating with ice therapy for 2x 15mins daily for the last week and was seemingly recovering well. Tonight she decided to have a small run in the yard and is limping again with swelling in the toe.
If you can help with diagnosis it would be appreciated.
Cheers

Craig, sounds like a "sprung" toe. You can do a seach on here for sprung toe that may give you some advice. They can be a bugga.
Rich.

Get some Zheng Gu Shui, Craig. Works very well on toes. Ultrasound under water, or laser treatment, are some other options.

Hi Graig Put a small band over two toes for support when you let her out take it off when you put back in kennel will take time

Having swollen up again after a short break from running makes it sound like a partial separation of the tendon at the toe. If he still wants to run you can cut the nail short (so it bleeds ) & let him run in a rearing run but not chase a lure.Sometimes the nail comes away & this helps it to repair more quickly. If you have an experienced greyhound vet he should be shown it while its swollen for proper diagnosis. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the advice thusfar.
What's the average recovery time for each of your suggested healing/treatment methods?
Cheers

Depends, Craig, but don't be in a hurry to run him again. Have patience. Sometimes the toe will remain large, but will feel hard, once the injury has healed.

I agree with Grant. It sounds like a tendon issue.
I would get your pup straight to a greyhound vet, especially if you were thinking of breaking it in any time soon.

Craig , I've just had a dog do a toe last week . Got him to my vet who diagnosed medial ligament damage . The toe joint swelled the size of a malteser . Best go to your vet because infection can take effect . The vet strapped my fella up for one week and with medication for 7 days too . Its a 6 week healing process . I wish your girl well . Keep her on the lead and she should be OK .

She has been to a vet and unfortunately they didn't diagnose anything. We left without an answer. I've come to conclude ligament damage.
Thank you all

Craig, bunged up toes are relatively common, so treat it, take your time bringing her back, and she should be ok. Good luck.

Craig, just to illustrate my point, a bitch we bred, Goodnight Skye, won last night in the first race at Cranbourne. It was her second start in a race since resuming from a seasonal spell and she won by nearly 10 lengths. She also has had 2 bunged up toes while off, which have healed well, and they make no difference to her running.

I recomend you use butchers brine and turps ahead of Zheng Gu Shui for this type of injury.

Ligament snapped or stretched? You can feel it.If snapped its most certainly a different situation than stretched which is a few week injury tops.

i had one dog with a toe problem, so when i was young i hurt myself i was told to spit on it, so with my dog i kept spitting on it, it seem to fix it.

Out of interest Carole, what was your method of healing?

Zheng Gu Shui on both, Craig. It did an excellent job.
