Have a 14 month old 34kg dog who has just sliced his front left pad right through. Got him to the vet and he told me it's unlikely to join back together and has wrapped it and put him on antibiotics. The dog was close to being sent to breakers but now on Vets advice it looks like he will have a third of his pad surgically removed at the end of this week. How long would it be roughly before he will be ready to go again? Never had a dog loose 1/3 of a pad, so will need to reschedule him at breakers. Anything else I need to take into account with this type of injury? Cheers.

Jack, get some Solosite gel and use that. It is amazing stuff, and heals injuries up really well, even bad ones. I don't know if it would heal the pad back up, but it would certainly help heal the tissue quickly after being operated on. Good luck with it.

Cheers Carole - the vet put a heap of that on before wrapping and gave me the rest of the tube to take home. Hadn't heard of it before, glad to hear it's good stuff. I have him muzzled and the wrap has held well so I haven't redressed it. Would it be best to leave it or redress cleaning and using fresh solosite? Thanks.

Brilliant stuff, Jack. We used it on a dog's bad groin skin tear that couldn't be stitched because of the position it was in, and it healed it up beautifully and quickly. Looking at it now, there doesn't appear to be any visible scar, and you would never know that the skin had been damaged.
You had better ask the vet about whether to change the bandage, Jack, as I can't advise you on that.

Jack, have had a similar experience, the Solosite gel works a treat, after that and when a "skin" started to cover the wound, I used "heel balm" I got it from a chemist but I am pretty sure you can get it from the super markets now. It worked extremely well, I applied it twice a day (unwrapped) for a few weeks.

Hope this helps.

Rich.

Hey Jack. Carole is spot on. Solosite gel is great stuff & have used it many times with success. Another product that I can recommend is CETRIGEN. It is an antibacterial , open wound healing properties. It is very versatile , cheap & worth having in your K9 "kit". Just take your time with your bloke Jack & maintain strict hygene at all times as pad wounds can very hard 2 heal & infection can occur easily. All the best jack

Cheers Steve - he will get the best care, the only thing that worries me is that he's 14 months old and I've always been told that you should get a dog educated before they reach 16-17 mnths so I hope it's healed and he's right to go before he reaches that age and I may have to go to another breaker as he will miss his booking but that's the trials and tribulations we have to deal with. Thanks again.
