Hi all, looking for some advice please. I have a hound that's very excitable and is constantly making his tail bleed from wagging it! I need to try and find something to put on it to toughen it up, I'm doing the whole putting pipe around it and padding the kennel etc but am looking for something to put on the tail to toughen it to stop the bleeding. Any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sarah, get some Friar's balsam and put that on several times a day. It has a styptic action,( seals off the bleeding blood vessels ) and will toughen the skin. Hydrogen peroxide also works, but FB toughens it up better, we have found. Good luck, as it can be a nuisance to fix. If it turns out to be unsuccessful, you may have to get the very end of the tail removed, to save the blood loss and any infection setting in, but that is a last resort.

Hi Sarah, some very good advice from Carole, but to help the healing process, get a plastic hair roller, feed that over the tip of tail, but make sure it covers the affected area,& using a sticking plaster, tape the hair roller onto the tail, this provides a cushioning affect at the tip of the tail when the dog's tail hit's anything, this also provides a lot more airflow around the wound than a rigid piece of plastic/rubber pipe, which will speed up the scabbing process, this is a bugger of injury to fix,but in time it will heal.(some dog's will invariably compound the problem by attempting to chew anything on their tail's off making it bleed again,so you may need to put an old race muzzle on while it heal's,hope this helps ).

my old dog has a habit of wagging hs tail against the pebble dashing which makes his tail bleed every time if not covered.i just wrap duck tape around the end about 3 or 4 times masking sure the end is open.i keep his tail covered constantly like this.is light and not bulky and he doesnt even know hes got it on.works a treat
