Lawrence, if he has any plaque build up on his teeth, this can cause gingivitis, which can cause spontaneous bleeding, like you have described.

Lawrence, get someone to help you, even perhaps hold his front end off the ground, while you have a better look at his mouth. Look for any gingivitis, bad or broken teeth, and see if anything is stuck across the roof of his mouth. There must be some reason for the blood being there. He could possibly have bitten his tongue, too. Best of luck !
Update it was a build up of plaque vet cleaned teeth and dog seems grand thanks again for all replys and advice

Glad you found the reason, Lawrence, and I'm sure the dog will be feeling better, too. An occasional bone to chew on will help keep the plaque down in future, too. Best wishes.
