| hi guys. have a machine that i thought was broke, i was using iodoised oil instead of water gel on the dogs and then when i tried the water test to see if it was ok it came up with an error. i have not used it for a month and when i tried it again it worked on the water test.my question is ,if it is doing the water test it should be ok and working fine?.also the head does not get very hot but it does get warm so is this right? love to hear your thoughts dermot

| Dermot, if you put the head under water and you see the "cone" shape appear, the yoke is working. The head does not get hot.

| do you mean that i put it in a bucket of water to try this? or just a couple of mm on the head and turn it on to see if the water ripples? thanks for your reply dermot

| Dermot, put the handset under water and turn it so you can see the face, then switch on and you will see a cone shape appear, that tells you its working. The head or face must always be covered either by gel or water when its switched on or damage will occur.

| Dermot, When I was first shown how to use an ultrasonic machine I was told to put a few drops of oil on the head and turn the machine on, turn it up to about 1.5 and you'll see the oil begin to move on the head, like little vibrations, keep turning it up just until the oil begins to spatter then back down until the spattering stops. This shows that the machine is working and the point when the oil stops spattering is supposedly the setting you should use on dogs. I've always done it this way and have never had any problems with burns or the like. This should take only a couple of seconds no more, you can damage the head if the machine is operating without aqueos/oil coupling medium and contact with the skin.

| dean i think most ultrasounds nowadays have a built in protection where you have up to 30 seconds to have head 'open' before any damage is done to head. i think i would always use the gel for machining and only use iodised oil for massaging...its pretty thick stuff.

| a dog vet that is one of the best in my opinion Janette mc Kenzie in Offaly once told me that most of the ultrasound machines were utterly useless they were just bad makes had been damaged and were not working properly or had lots of other faults they were doing more for the owners peace of mind than for dogs injury
