Richard. young pups coming into full work very often have blood readings that need correcting, especially things like anaemia. This is very common, and accounts for problems like you are experiencing. Get a full blood profile done, as Mark suggested, a full check by a good muscleman, and also check the tonsils thoroughly. You will probably find the answer when you have done these things. Good luck.

No problem, Richard. Glad to help, as this is pretty common with young dogs coming into full work. Good luck.

What were the haemoglobin and PCV/haematocrit readings, Richard ?

She also had a bad cough when pulling on the lead when pulling hard which a course of anti biotics didnt fix, so hopefully the 168 Platelets is a reason why this still occurs. Hopeful for a good outcome now. Rich

Did you have a good look at her tonsils ? Also, I don't know if you noticed my post just above your last one ?

Heamatocrit was 0.56 (border line low) PCV ? which one is that?

The PCV is the haematocrit, Richard. This is a bit low, but not drastic. The haemoglobin is usually written as Hb.

We have been looking at her tonsils for months thinking that may have been the problem but could not find a thing. They are all clear! We had her on a heavy cours of anties a few months ago and they did work but the problem returned within a few weeks of finishing the course. Thus the low Platelets would account for a return.

Richard, feel the glands at the back and underneath the lower jaw bone. There is one on each side. They usually feel like a smallish soft marshmallow. If there is a tonsil problem, these glands can get very large. We have often had dogs' tonsils taken out when we knew there had been a recurring problem. Many times the vets have said that they were ok, then have had to admit that they found the tonsils to be in a bad way when they operated.

Have checked them and all fine, she is a bit of a mystery as when she pulls up after a run she has been fine, no coughing, no blue tounge ex. yet if you push her chest (high up) she will cough! leading us to look at a lung infection. A pretty tough course of anti's worked, but within weeks it returned, leading me to look at imune system....

Richard, a fungal infection is possible lower down the throat. Have you been given Baytril a/bs at all ?

Carole, what would not help this bitch is her bedding! she has a "large" race kennel leading to a 20m x 20m yard. The inside kennel is concrete floor with a built in "bed" of lambs wool but even when the temp is below zero she will sleep on the concrete floor. This could not be a good thing for her....
