Hello, can anyone help out on what causes anaemia in greyhounds and also the best way to treat anaemia? is it short term or is it a long term illness?? Cheers

Hi Craig could be as simple as iron deficiency, but as extreme as hookworm mate,i would get the dog to a vet for a blood test, both of these conditions would be tested for once the vet knows why the dog has been presented.good luck mate. ( iron supplement will rectify the problem/iron rich foods as well, once treated for the cause, shouldn't be a long term problem)

Cheers Daryl, I've had the blood count done which determined anaemia but I wasn't sure about the best treatment for it or if it is common within greyhounds...cheers

ok mate thats good that you have had that done,i would suggest to use a product called Ironcyclen, made by Vetsearch, give 5mls daily for 3 days on,then three days off cycle & keep this up as a routine additive to it's feed.if you are feeding calcium, try not to feed both supplements in the same feed, give seprately( one at night, the other in the morning).you should see a change in the colour of youre dogs gums,& also look better in general, good luck.

Craig, you sound like a newcomer to the training ranks, I'd thoroughly recommend you have a look at Tom Meulman's great little website for a better understanding of all things greyhound. See link for his website and specifically the blood profiles page.

If I ever have an anaemic pup/dog I get bloods and fecal exams. Sometimes you need the fecal exam too determine if its worm or parasites.
