Could be fungus. Try a very mild solution of teatree oil see link:

Shaun, check his throat and tonsils for any sign of redness or infection. If his race form has dropped off, or you are really concerned about it, a blood test may be helpful in showing up a problem, such as infection or a liver problem.

Has he been out late boozing and going to dodgy clubs?

You might not be too far off actually - dog could have an infection in his genitalia, that makes him lick those parts for the bacteria or fungus to spread to his mouth. Don't think it's sound to drink a bottle of teatree oil, but I've used a VERY MILD solution on my stud dog and it worked wonders - he's still very sound, very energetic and very much alive.... :-P

Brian & Lotte, your both on the money.
Males do masturbate & the above are the tell tale signs in the majority of cases.
In a stud muzzle him for 3 days before a service so he performs
as he should.
Bitches too will have "lip stick" traces on the lips most often caused by irritation to genitalia & they lick constantly.
A/Biotics from your vet will clear infection, in bitches hormone
use sometimes causes this problem.

he,s licking his lips people not his genitalia ,where did that come from .
checked for tonsils and teeth and gum infections ,cant see anything wrong with his mouth at all as he,s a young dog i wouldnt expect that anyway tbh ,
i,ll get him to vet if it persists ,he does seem better today mind .

Shaun, tonsillititis can occur at any age. Good luck with him.

your dog is lacking vit, C and iron also a sour gut also cuses a dog to lick its lips all thd time. Do you give your dog skimed milk with water after you race or trial him if you do stop it now as it is more harmful to the dog give him louy warm water and honey that will sort him out asap.

Dont give it teatree oil its very bad for animals it can kill.

Hi Shaun,I worked for a specialised greyhound vet for well over 2 years and from what he taught me was that this is more than likely a urinary tract infection. Is he also licking he penis a fair bit?

If you get a full blood test done, I hope it reveals some answer for you, Shaun.
