Without doubt, PAW is the most successful Greyhound Breeder Australia has ever seen and ever will. He would be at the top of the ladder in the world, as well.
He would also be the most prolific.

There are so many theories on breeding, from line breeding, inbreeding, outcrossing, breeding to certain nicks, the x,y generation theories, it goes on and on and on.

My theory is that any theory has to be proven many times over, and what better way to prove it than do it yourself.
PAW has done that...or has he???

Did Paul just decide, "I'm going to outcross every bitch I have and pray for success?
Did he find the key to the x,y, theory?
Did he find nicks from 10 generations back, that when multiplied, produced Champions?
Did he spend years and years locked in his study, milling over 1,000s and 1,000s of previous successful breeds to unravel a secret or common thread?

Or was it just a belief and gungho attitude that achieved success through massive NUMBERS?

I am HOPING Paul Wheeler himself will one day post on this thread and share with us an insight into the early days of his turning point decision to heavily OUTCROSS and his reasons for doing so.
He has nothing to lose as he is so far in front of the field, no-one in this lifetime or the next will get near him
I've watched a few interviews and no denying his passion or willingness to share his thoughts.

In the meantime, it would be interesting for all you breeding buffs to apply your theories to his better(and worst) breeding ventures and explain why you think they worked or didn't.

I would love to know how many times PAW... felt frustrated, torn his hair out, near divorces, hit the bottle, swore, and near gave up going through his breeding plan.

THEORIZE AWAY...if you dare.

He moved properties to a BIGGER.....more professional set-up (as he out-grew his last brillant acreage) and hung up the lead (so to speak) to concentrate on the farm.

He spoke to the BEST trainers in Australia...IN EACH STATE that he races in.... & put them under his wing by sending them only nothing but the best racers.....ready to go.

His breeding theories are like everybody else's that's been in the game for sometime. Always trying to better the next generation of pups though experience....& blood, sweat & tears.

That's my view after nearing 40 years in the game.

I think everyone spends a great deal of time on breeding, some work, some do not. That goes for PAW as well. With around 300 pups per year bred by himself, I would give him the edge on chances. LOL.

MICHAEL;
As you know, this like any other is a numbers game.If you have the numbers, the money, the facilities and the quality stock, the chances of success are far greater than they would be under normal circumstances.the simple fact tnat Paul has all the above gives him that much more chance of success.Good luck to him.

Q1. He's done that over and over using the same method every great Aus breeder has in the past and present. He saturates pedigrees and exposes damlines just like they did. It appears from outside that from a ped perspective thats all they do.

If you look at his Jindara Bale line & what has come out of it, it's very obvious he saturates 2 sires, with almost every mating he does. If anyone studies it fully they will work it out.

It's how many great Aus breeders have bred over the yrs.

Q2. Outcrossing every bitch .....No idea

Q3. He's publicly stated on this forum he doesn't linebreed in x (knowingly anyway)

Q4. Looking in from outside at his breeding efforts at times that appears to be the case. He will try to get the ped as close up as possible from a nick perspective within 5 gens, but he will settle for nicks further back(6, 7, 8 gens)if he has to, or thinks the sire that carries those nicks may suit that particular bitch better.

Q5. No idea but it's not something you need to do when so many others(including PAW) have led the way. Just have to study their methods.

Q6. Pass (loaded question)

That's my take from studying what he's done.

The other point is that the pedigree is where it all starts and only one component of it. He rears, breaks in, has better after care programs and trainers at his disposal than anyone else. It all adds up in the long run.

Last nite he had 7 dogs in one race at the Meadows that are grade 2 or 3 dogs. One hell of an achievement.

With 9 nominations for that particular race going by GRV's grading. I would consider it past the post that PAW supplied the majority of the field. I think his Melbourne cup runners [7 out of 8] was much better.

As a one off I'd agree H, but to be able to have the consistency with his product to be able to provide a final field of runners that are at that level is amazing.jmo.

A bit like having a team of Daniel Hannabery's (in AFL)

Spot on,
Generations of breeding large numbers will produce a few handy broods.

with the strike rate he has Johnno, that's just not numbers, no way.

I think the nos help him when he has them racing and they get hurt - he has another to take it's place. Likewise when they injure themselves growing up, he can replace them, but that strike rate cant just be attributed to only nos because it means he has one just as good to replace it.

If you have 5 broods Darren and have several winners turn out each year, would you improve on that with 10 broods or go backward.

look back a few years ago and when he went to USA irish blood he went through a lean time. Im sure it cost him a pretty penny to outcross his bitches miss a generation or 2 to get where he is today.
