.
Hi everyone,

The carnival is not too far away now. I have been in the industry for thirty years and never been to the carnival, but will be going this year. However, I won't be taking any dogs.

If anyone needs any help with their dogs, from walking, boxing, kennelling or checking, then feel free to ring me on 0404 469 113 before or during the carnival. I am not a vet, just a person who has checked dogs off/on for thirty years. So, all care taken, but no responsibility for your quick-footed pooches if they injure themselves. Hopefully they won't.

If I do check your dogs I won't be 'needling' them, but will recommend ice, ultrasonic and/or massage therapy as treatment. If I do have requests then it will be a `first in / best dressed' arrangement. I will be there from Friday to Monday.

All the best with the preparation of your dogs for the carnival and hope to see you there !

The Coonamble Carnival got off to a flying start Friday afternoon when a local trainer taking out the `first' and it couldn't have been scripted any better. The crowd settled in, forming their groups and went into the betting ring with a plan to take on the six or so bookies who looked ready for the `show-down' after high noon.

There were the usual punters and characters (who are usually one in the same), as well as new heads including myself. After introductions `tips' were being freely provided at intervals and some were good and some bit the dust on the track which incidentally, looked in remarkable order.
.
As each race approached I tried to find the right spot for viewing as I inadvertently mingled with the crowd. As the punters went back into the betting ring to catch the early betting moves, I looked around and saw Kevin Gordon (I met his grandson earlier), Ghost and an attractive young blonde-haired woman who was working from the office. They were all busy going about their duties with a minimum of fuss. I grabbed a bite to eat (steak and onions) and moved into the betting ring. The afternoon was warm, but there was good shelter and nothing to complain about.
.
The afternoon's racing went quickly and everyone went somewhere to get ready for the evening's racing. Fresh from the break and now back at the track, the `raffle lady' came around and I bought the customary raffle tickets. The `raffle lady' thought that I was with some random woman who was waiting to purchase some tickets as well, and she asked me if I was purchasing for two and the `other' woman laughed and said, "She thinks that you are my husband !" I paused then smiled politely.

Later on that night, the `other' woman won with her dog and as she was coming back from the 530m boxes, she spotted me along the fence and said, "That's for us, hubby." I smiled, laughed out loud and quickly walked into the betting ring.
.
There was the younger element within the crowd and they were enjoying themselves.
.
Around the halfway mark, it was a tight contest between the Bookies and the Punters with one of the winners being backed in from 8-1 to 4-1, then the word went around and others jumped on late and forced the price into Evens. The dog won like a heavily backed commodity - with the proverbial `leg in the air'. The Bookies were quiet for a short time and the next onslaught came shortly after when another dog from Box 1 was heavily backed. The boxes opened and the One dog jumped in front then ran wide on the first turn, which gave another one in the pack, a chance to shoot out to a ten length lead down the back straight with the One closing. He was now only a few lengths behind the leader on the bend. Upon straightening the leader was about to be collared by the One, but right near the line, the One stargazed and it went to a photo finish after the crowd gave a big confused `hhrrr ??' that Scoobie Doo would have been proud of. It was revealed that the One had just missed !!
.
As I was returning to the betting ring after that race, I heard one of the `bookies' shout-out to anyone who was listening, "that's the way you do it !" He was an imposing man, but no more than the Clergate Cowboy who impressed me with his class and style. His dogs were strong and liked a `bit of ground'. Due to having a dog in consecutive races an attractive woman in a white and black dress paraded and boxed the ultimate winner for the Clergate Team. Brilliant !!
.
The punters were on the `back-foot' and couldn't really get moving again and some had to settle with a small loss at the end of Day 1. The bookies had 'smiles on their dials'. I was off to grab another steak, but they had `run out' so I went for a rissole. I knew they bred them hard and tough in the bush and now I know why.

Bravo Mark an excellent synopsis and personal account, it had me reminiscing of days past, and by the sounds of it not much has changed in over a quarter of a century ...not even the rissoles!

I spoke briefly with Helen Pullman on Friday night whilst she was handling a dog.

I jokingly said, "I was told that I'd have to watch two good trainers up here, the Pringles and Pullmans."

She said whilst smiling, "Nah"
.
Well done to them.
