Bill which minister are you referring to? Under Australian Contract Law and Consumer Law relating to contracts, it will be a court that decides. The industry is looking at misleading or deceptive conduct and unconscionable conduct, the conditions of this contract obviously do not protect the interests of greyhound participants in NSW. There are many factors that change contractual obligations and one is where one party is at a disadvantage.

Casino Abandoned
Written by: Greyhound Racing NSW

27/06/17

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has regrettablyhad to abandon tonight's meeting at Casino.

The abandonment occurred as a result of the Casino Greyhound Club paintingthe kennel block on the day of the race meeting.
Fumes and chemical residue from the paint posed a significant welfare risk to the greyhounds who were to be housed in the kennels throughout the race meeting, leaving stewards no choice but to abandon the meeting.

In abandoning the meeting, GRNSW has expressed its extreme disappointment with the Casino Greyhound Club.

The club's decision to paint the kennel block on the day of the race meeting failed to consider the possible welfare consequences it would have on the greyhounds and also deprived participants, fans of the sport and people who wager on greyhounds a chance to participate in tonight's race meeting.

GRNSW will be making further inquiries to the Casino Greyhound Club in the coming days to ensure such an avoidable event never occurs again.

At this stage, it is anticipated thatthe meeting at Casino on Friday willproceed.

The New GRNSW Board.
.
Who are these persons on the greyhound board ?

We, as NSW greyhound participants, were all excited to hear or read that the Government had taken the next step towards rediscovery, by announcing the new directors of the GRNSW Board. However, is everyone happy with the composition of the Board and the decision making process ? What part did our former interim CEO, Paul Newson (who is now Deputy Secretary of Department of Industry) play ? Let's dissect the Board.

There is Morris Iemma, the new Chairperson. He is a former Labor Premier of this State, greyhound lover and well connected. His role on the Reform Panel couldn't have been any easier as the Baird/Grant Government changed its mind and overturned the Ban shortly before the Orange By-Election. The Government lost the By-Election which gave the Reform Panel an easy ride. Most of the recommendations were regurgitated from previous committees and groups that were formulated over the past three to four years.
.
Why Morris Iemma ? Is he a good friend of Mike Baird ? I don't know.
.
How big of a greyhound lover is he ? I don't know.
.
Where has he been for the past ten years when the industry was falling apart ? I don't know the answer to that question either. .

However, it appears that he has become friends with Mr Brenton Scott who was another Reform Panel member and current CEO of the GBOTA. I don't have a problem with this association, but Mr Iemma sought a lot of answers from Mr Scott. Who else did Mr Iemma consult during his time on the Reform Panel ?

Ms Yvonne Howie who is the Deputy Chairperson. Ms Howie is a successful accountant at the top level andhas been onmany Boards. Why did she apply ?
.
Hugh Armenris a successful liquidatorat the top level. Why did he apply ?
.
Michael Eberand one of our greyhound participant's representative on the Board. He is an accountant, successful owner/trainer, former Greyhound Action Group (GAG) member and spokesperson, former GBOTA Director for one term,Richmond Race Club member and former GRIPAC member to GRNSW.It's obvious why he applied for the position.
.
Mathew Waring is the other participant's representative. Mr Warring is the former Richmond Race ClubTreasurer. I don't know why he applied, but I hope he serves us well.
.
In summary, the Board is made up of only two greyhound participants of the five directors.
.
Questions are being asked bycountry-based owners and trainers why one of their ten applicants (thirty four applicants in total applied), wasn't successful thus giving them a `voice' on the Board ? They are very disappointed to say the least. It would've given the Board a fairer balance and representation, because the majority of greyhound participants are based in the country.
.
What comes to me immediately is an old analogy that 'you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig!'

The `kicker' will be the appointment of a new CEO. IMO, the new CEO should come from outsidethe `old brigade', one who has fresh ideas without being pragmatic, one who is well-equipped with excellent sports administration credentials and skills, media expertise and a great knowledge of all the racing codes. This must happen if we are to move forward and survive !
.
We don't want `snouts in the trough' because sooner or later, the lipstick will wash off !

Mark well said and i only hope that Brenton Scott has nothing to do with the GRNSW CEO, everything he is involved with has been a disaster for the greyhound industrie and i have said before he should go back to SA and stay there.

Thanks Steve. I should've written the majority of OUR participants train outside of Sydney so one director should've/could've come from there had their qualifications allegedly stacked up.
.
I wonder who sat on the interview panel and what was the process ?

Who received an interview ? Do tell.

Is it true that GRNSW will need to find two CEOs ? One for the commercial side and one for the integrity side to match up with the two Boards ? Kerching ! Kerching !
.
Anyway, who are we hiring and firing these days ? Don't they do background checks ?
.
It's the same old merry-go-round !

Here is a statement from our then CEO Paul Newson back in Feb 2016 Chaser, and he states the following, "whether greyhound has a future in NSW turns on the findings and recommendations of the Special Commission and the NSW Government's considerations of its report. Greyhound Racing is facing challenges in every jurisdiction and an increasingly VOCAL MINORITY advocating for the industry to be BANNED! GRNSW is a fierce advocate for the industry and is committed to securing its social licence and repositioning the greyhound racing brand for the better of all stakeholders, to ensure the industry can thrive and continue to make an ecoonmic and social contribution to NSW."

According to the Hunter Express, that statement is so full lies and contains BS its just not funny. The Hunter Express states that these are some of the facts. Mr Newson was allegedly mistaken (lied ?) at the Commission re: greyhound numbers that were euthanized, supported Baird and Grant to close down the industry, wanted surveillance conducted on the Hunter Express and three other racing identities, one being the biggest and most successful greyhound owner breeder in Australia.

The Hunter Express has asked Mr Newson to show us what a SOCIAL LICENCE looks like and then maybe he could post it up on the web site. Mr Newson, a public servant within the NSW Government, who many believe is still calling the 'shots' in some way, from his departmental desk you might ask how ? Well, the Hunter Express recently forwarded his application to preside on the Board of GRNSW. Surprise ! Surprise ! Not being really surprised at all, he received a letter from the Department of Industry, saying he was unsuccessful. The letter was signed by the Head of the Department Mr Paul Newson (still calling the shots ?)

The Hunter Express didn't expected anything less. Mr Troy Grant aka Boo Boo Grant, gave him the job in the first place and now it appears that he has been promoted. After all, the objective was to close down the industry (John Chapman walks into the Sports Minister's Office in Lithgow) that was clear for everyone to see, but of course they got it wrong, Yogi Baird got it wrong. Boo Boo Grant got it wrong. Then, the circus act began with more back-flips than a Russian gymnast.

Everyone cannot wait for the next election. They've ruined some lives in the process. We should kick these types of politicians to the kerb and leave them there.

They've done very little to help the greyhound industry over the thirty years that I've been involved. Now they want to destroy our water aquifers, artesian and sub-artesian basins in NSW. Wasn't it Yogi Baird who said that selling off our electricity would lead to smaller power bills ? Don't trust the two biggest parties. Give the SFF Party the `balance of power' so that they can make the right decisions for the greyhound people of NSW and beyond. They are on record, showing that they are helping our cause.

Wasn't Gladys 3rd in line? In Baird/Brains cabinet? and VOTED ALONG WITH TOOLE to close down the Industry? Whats changed??
Maybe Baird/Brain could again say to the people of NSW re: Poles and Wires, Council Amalgamations, Health, Education, Fishing, Light/Rail, West/Connex etc. WE GOT IT WRONG! Gladys wont!

Terry,
You're correct. The list goes on. What about the illegal dumping of asbestos and other toxic products right next to or on the Hawkesbury R n other places and won't enforce the radius rule for rubbish dumping in our State. Instead, the dumpers drive it 600klms over the Qld boarder to Ipswich where it's free to dump rubbish and there are four or five tips over in Ippy ! It may have changed now.
.
The EPA here reported itself to ICAC (weakened power and strength)! What a joke. Ba ha.
.
So, the Govt is worried about greyhounds n its participants? Relevance of it all ? While they're making a mockery out of our industry (some participants can't read and write) they're taking the limelight off the real problems of our State and Country. Add them to the list.

One of the unsuccessful applicants for the CEO's position, Warren Wilson was allegedly told he was over-qualified for the job. Hello ? Was he the best person for the job? One would think so. Anyway, there's nothing we can do about the political interference or influence.

Our Commissioner has/had strong ties to Racing NSW.

One thing WW stated to a friend is that he believes that the new merger with the TABs could provide a better outcome in terms of TAB distribution and should be explored or discussed by the Alliance, GRNSW and/or GBOTA with the new TAB to see if there is a better deal available.

I've had the unfortunate experience of finding that out several times.
Waking up beside them after a hard night put me off bacon for many years.

An ex liquidator and an accountant together would give the same effect.

John,
Yes, we need to go back to scratch and re-form the industry, remembering that any changes will attract a flood of objections from interested parties. Some points ....

1. Cessnock is a dead duck. Please let it go away. There is no way in the world that the authority will give it new life. Nor should it.

2. "...Victoria we see where they have a pretty good array of tracks with very few having bend starts". No way! First, of their 15 tracks only 4 have no corner starts - Warragul, Cranbourne, Horsham (570m in abeyance) and the straight track at Healesville. Second, at Sale, Warrnambool, Ballarat and Bendigo they replaced corner starts at two with more corner starts while at the other two they just shortened the trip to make them into corner starts. Vic has spent millions and achieved nothing - even a negative result. (Certainly, their public facilities are much better - except for Meadows).

3. In total, Vic has 11 corner start trips at 15 tracks while NSW has 16 corner starts at 19 TAB tracks. Not much to choose from.

4. Many corner starts can be eliminated in a flash by simply shifting the boxes but both clubs and authority are blind to the need - Dapto, Richmond, Bulli, Gosford, Gardens, Casino and Lismore have had millions spent on them over recent years but still ended up with crook starts. Similarly, the initial Goulbourn re-build produced a ridiculous 450m bend start which then cost many dollars to be converted to a more amenable 440m.

5. I agree we run the risk of going broke - mostly due to rising costs but also as a result of not marketing the product and poor management over the decades.

6. Please name one area where Vic is "more efficient" than NSW. Their income is more lucrative only because of the benefit of better commission splits approved by the government. But they lost $6m last year and are offering a $3m prize money increase from later this year at a time when the full effect of staff increases are about to occur. As in NSW, an increasing proportion of wagering is coming from corporates who pay a lower rate than the TAB - ie they are looking at a declining rate of return. I have yet to work out where the money is coming from.

7. Some track rationalisation is probably a good thing but woe betide the brave person who suggests where. Politicians will come out of cracks in the ground. Will Iemma fight the good cause? I seriously doubt it. Meantime, why do Lismore and the nearby Casino still co-exist?

8. The only practical hope is growth in income but, so far, I have not seen anyone in the Rhodes bunker who has any idea how to do it - or who even wants to do it.

9. Be careful about "under-utilisation" of tracks. I am no expert but my understanding is that by the time you add up the impact of maintenance, weather, trialling and racing curators are hard put to supply a decent result. A couple a week might be the maximum. (See also the recent Gosford catastrophes).

10. Another reason for your "deadwood" problem is the long term decline in average field quality - something which will get worse under current breeding trends. The GRNSW approach is to fiddle with grading while at the same time ignoring the need to research and uncover the real reasons. This is a classical example of a failure to manage well. It is what you get when you have a bureaucracy running things. And, no, putting trainers up there will not - cannot - fix the problem. (I like Eberrand's approach to life but he is only one and, in any event, he will be forever subject to a conflict of interest. He should not be there).

Bruce: You make some salient points, but stop short on your theories with others. Most tracks are oval-oblong in shape if you try and eliminate most corner starts, you risk shorter races and dogs reaching corners at Higher speeds. Bigger one turn tracks would be more desirable. imo
Have been to Sandown, more Punters playing Pokies than watching or punting on dogs. But another income stream! NSW has no Clubs with Pokies.
Lismore is a GBOTA track. All gate takings, trial fee's, Restaurant takings go to the NSW GBOTA Bruce!..Sacred Cow
Casino is self sufficient, but track is on council land. Both attract full fields! when allowed to operate as TAB B tracks.
Why Bruce did NSWGR select Lismore-Grafton to trial 6 dog fields?
Because they have the dog numbers. Yes the 2 tracks Lis/Cas could evolve with one committee, curator, track Manager-Staff etc. But Wont!
Why Wont the GBOTA even consider leaving Wentworth Park? is there a secret hidden agenda? Dying a slow agonising death. So much for a bright sustainable future when shackled with leg irons.
Point 10 Bruce: Michael Ebberand is the only one who has experienced all of the above. Bad Grading, Corner starts, Track Maintenance issues. That's not a conflict of interest, fixing that mess. He has mine and MOST other trainers vote. (Not that any Bureaucrat cares)
