Busy weekend ahead for Longford!
The Longford Derby 2nd round will take place on Friday night (which is now down to 24 runners) . After a lot of runners had their first look last week a few big runs are to be expected. In the first heat Cabra Twister will be expected to go well, while in the 2nd heat Away Jet and Cabra Hurricane should contest it closely. The 3rd heat will see the fastest round one winner Budgie Marbh take his chances and in the 4th round it looks like Elusive heights could take beating.
Monday night at Longford will be a follow on from the latest special event nights . After already having a 9 race card of 805 races in March, the Last couple of weeks have seen a 570 yrds night in which 11 races went to post. There was also a Veterans night in which 5 races were contested. This weekend sees an 11 race all Bitch Night on Monday . The entries for this night were so plentiful that 3 additional races are on this Fridays card. 14 all bitch races in total will be ran this weekend!

It is with great sadness that due to the current financial situation at Longford the track will be racing One night only in July.
The dates Longford will be running are Monday July 2nd, Friday July 6th, and Monday the 16th,23rd and 30th.
Please note that due to the large pool size in Longford we are asking people to enter there dogs with at least 3 weeks left on the card dog enter with less cannot be guaranteed a race . Many Thanks

Something wrong somewhere. Longford has the biggest pool of dogs,we are told there are plenty of voluntary/charity workers so very little in the line of wages, basic overheads same as any other track, receives 25,000 in donations, gets the same grant as all other tracks. Seems to me in the 79 years this track has been open it never had a financial problem or ever looked for help financially until it changed ownership 4 years ago. How do all the other small tracks manage without donations and a very small pool of dogs to play with?

David. It is the same tenant company running the stadium today as has been for some 18 years now. The change of the stadium ownership you refer to was only a change of landlord. The stadium property owner since his purchase a little over 3 years ago has not charged us any rent in that period of time. The simple fact is that Longford, like other country tracks in Ireland has seen a dramatic fall in attendances in the last couple of years in particular. We are hopeful that operating one race night per week, as is also the case now at Thurles, will help us to maintain greyhound racing at Longford.

What does a pool of dogs mean to the day to day running costs of a track ?

That is a very pool assessment of what's going on in Longford. Private trials and the few paying to come in on racenights is short of what is required to run the place on top of what funding it receives.

It's a shame, but the price of a good dog every year, would help keep the place afloat.

There are a lot of owners and trainers out there, we all know who they are, that should take a look at themselves regarding the survival of Longford.

A survey was done and over 130 owners/trainers that raced in Longford last year failed to answer the call and didn't contribute to the 'Fighting Fund'.

The names missing off the Public list made available was very disappointing. However, the names of all those that did contribute, some who had no connection with Longford, gives hope for the future.

The sad thing is, it will be the same folk that will come up trumps again and try to keep the place up and running for those that dont contribute anything.

A track with a large pool of dogs should make igb sit up and take note. They should be doing more financially to keep the track open, because a large pool of dogs indicates to me that everyone wants to run their dogs at that track. Why they want to makes sense because it's the safest track in all of Ireland. As for the ones that refrain from donating that makes sense also as I've never seen them buy as much as a cup of tea. Probably never go to chapel on a Sunday incase they would have to put a euro on the plate. But they will use the track to school their dogs and enter all the big stakes with a chance of financial gain for themselves. Jmo all stakes should be confined to track supporters. Just to reiterate, there wouldn't be any sense in keeping a track open that didn't have a large pool of dogs.
