As I am basing one of my brood lines around this sire, I was wondering if some people had access to his story or races etc. I have done a google search & there looks to be some good articles on the old GG site put up I think, by Denis McKeon, but you can't or I can't access them via the link.
The more I read about the greyhound, the more his deeds amaze, so any link to history, anecdote etc would be much appreciated.

Yes Doug, his stats are very imposing as a broodsire. But he is still relatively unknown to most Australian breeders.

I know that he only had 7 starts before injury and was unbeaten, he won with a leg in the air and had enormous pace. He was considered by many to be the best of the best at the time.

Courtesy of American Hall of Fame

The brindle son of HBs Commander and Mystic Rose, Molotov was whelped in December of 1994 and was bred, owned and raced by the Ryan Farms Kennel of Abilene, Kan.
Molotov broke the track record at Abilene Greyhound Park before moving on to Mile High Greyhound Park where he won his first outing despite trouble, the Great Expectations stake for young puppies, in June of 1996. In his next start he demolished a Grade D field by 15 lengths to set a new track record of 31.19. In Grade C, the winning margin was 19 lengths with a 31.30 time. Then in Grade B, his fourth career start, he again won by 15 lengths and set a new track record with a time of 30.96. He won his next race, his first Grade A outing, with a come-from-behind effort, and then won his sixth outing with a 12-length Grade A victory. Unfortunately, the 79-pound speedster then suffered a career-ending injury.
Retiring early with such an outstanding racing career, Molotov quickly became one of the most sought after and most used sires in America, fathering more than 7,600 puppies by the time he died in 2006. It took only three years for him to rise to the Number One spot in the U.S. Sire Standings, and he continued to capture sire championships for five consecutive years, from 1999 to 2003. Molotov was continuing a family tradition as his father, HBs Commander, was the sire champion for four years, from 1994 to 1997, and a distant ancestor, Rocker Mac*, is the only sire in history that won seven sire titles, 1959 through 1965. Molotov joins both HBs Commander and Rocker Mac* in the Hall of Fame.
Molotov produced all eight finalists in the 2003 Great American Futurity at the Woodlands; he also sired five of the finalists in the 2001 Derby Lane Sprint Classic.
Three of Molotovs offspring were named to All-America Teams, Courageous Nicky in 2001, Rooftop Moby in 2003, and Dustin The Way in 2004. Many other puppies have won stake events and track titles around the country, or have become outstanding producers. Craigie Whistler is among the Top Five in todays Sire Standings and has produced All-Americas as well. Other Top 20 sires include DKs Prime Time and Grenade; and, listed in the Top 10 dams in 2005 was PHX Utep.
Molotovs line continues to flourish with more than 10 percent of all sires and dams on the 2006 Sire and Brood Matron Standings products of this terrific Greyhound.

Today I received a great gift of paraphernalia from Ilse Rasmussen regarding greyhounds Molotov, It's Terbear, It's A Clevercatch....simply fascinating reading.
I was stunned to find a copy of the race book which included Molotovs last start.

I have had several great email chats with Ilse & she has given me a rare insight into several greyhounds I've been interested in namely Molotov & It's A Clevercatch. You just can't beat first hand knowledge & as I have said before not many Aussie greyhound enthusiasts know just how good some of these dogs were, especially Molotov.

I have always had an interest in the broodbitch Buzz Off and by luck Ilse was very familiar with Molotov & It's A Clevercatch from this damline.
I have planned this mating

So to receive articles & racebook form guides with these greyhounds in it was exciting stuff.

So Ilse, although I've thanked you privately, I hope you don't mind me doing the same on the forum. Your generosity & effort to help me has been outstanding.

If it's hard-copy stuff Glenn, any chance it could be scanned and put up in the Library on this site? I'm a big fan of Molotov too, from what little I know of him.

Courtesy of M Roper

Molotov, by HBs Commander out of Mystic Rose, had only seven races in his career, but set track records in two of them before breaking a leg after which he was retired to stud. Molotovs fantastic conformation made an impression early onone breeder who had brought his best bitch to Ryan Farms to be bred to Molotovs uncle, Great Son, the 1994 Hollywood World Classic winner and All American, noticed Molotov in the next pen and liking what he saw, asked who he was. Even though he hardly recognized the name he bred his female to Molotov. What was an unlucky break for Molotovs racing career proved to be a lucky one for breeders as his first pups to the track were fast. He broke into the Sire Standings at 53rd in 1998, leapt to first in 1999 and stayed there until 2003, a five-year run at the top. As he was injured young and his stud career began early, it was likely that he could have sustained his #1 status into the foreseeable future, but he was stricken with a prostate condition and was rendered sterilehis current crop of pups, sired in 2002, are his last. His influence will be felt for decades to come, however, as more than 30 Molotov sons and hundreds of daughters are already carrying his legacy into the future. He is currently the top sire of brood bitches in the U.S. In 2003 Molotov was brought by Ryan Farms to witness the final of the $207,000 Great American Futurity, our national puppy stake, in which the winning sire was not in doubt as every contestant in the race was his son or daughter, believed to be a world first

The 2 available in Australia that I fancy with Molotov in their pedigrees are AFLEET ALEX and KINLOCH BRAE.

Both great dogs.

Several from this litter were sold recently at the Dapto Puppy Auction. We are rearing one of them (a dog) and he is most impressive. Only wish we had purchased a bitch pup ourselves. A terrific tap into blue blood outcross.

Hi Ray

I was going to the auction to specifically see that litter, but couldn't make it.
That cross brings in the 'super' brothers, Blendway & Braddy.
I have been told pups from American Spots first litter are rocking the clock.

And without sounding like a used car salesman, I'm pretty happy with the effort of my Bit Chili bloke from the litter sister.

Dyna Lachlan could be a potential great cross for this damline

When I give it the eyeball test, I have to admit, Molotov was likely the fastest greyhound I've ever seen. The power and grace of his stride is simply amazing---otherworldly. Below, he is #2 in the first video, #8 in the 2nd video. The mind boggles at the thought of him having raced long enough to have competed at longer distances.

He was a sire of impact, and his daughters have proven to be phenomenal producers. Check out how many of Lonesome Cry's "top offspring" on GD are out of Molotov daughters.

He is from the same Australian female family that gave us Westy Whizzer, Tell You Why's greatest son.

Molotov sons were eagerly awaited as sires, but the failure of Gable Dodge daughters to show well as a group, early in the careers of some of Molotov's most promising sons, did not do them any favors. Meanwhile, Molotov's daughters were producing stakes winner after stakes winner from all manner of sires. His sons, not having access to his daughters, coupled with the miserable early performance of many Gable Dodge daughters, (who should have been the natural crossing lines for many Molotov sons), exerted some compression on them as a group, Craigie Whistler notwithstanding.

The most exciting sire prospect we have here in the US is a Brett Lee grandson who is 3x3 to Molotov, through daughters.

Below, link to the race that I feel likely undid Molotov. He is #2.
