Hi All, in the history of the sport internationally, who was "THE GREATEST" greyhound the world has ever seen? Pure ability wise not necessarily the dog with the best credentials. So if anyone out there has an extensive knowledhe of NZ/AUS/IRE/ENG greyhounds please reply or even if you have an extensive knowledge of your respective countries? Look forward to hearing from you all:) for me I know a bit about Ireland and Australian and id have to say pure ability wise arguably The Mighty Miata:)
So it took 4 pages for RAPID JOURNEY to be named, Funny that!
He won 6 Group 1 Races, coming from near last on the top turn at Cannington to win a Group 1.
With Respect, RAPID JOURNEY is the GREATEST greyhound the world has seen, numerous track record, world record prizemoney earning (which would be in excess of $1 million today), essentially a backyard bred greyhound.
I dont know of a greyhound who could run the Angle Park track record of Brett Lee, he had numerous track record and posted 28.88 over 515m. I don't know if Rapid Journey could beat that time, but he would not bee far off, but Brett Lee couldn't win at Group 1 level off the bunny, bearing in mind that he won 31 from 39 leading in all as he was a freak.
As i rate Group 1 wins higher than Track Records, as a Group 1 win is against the best available dogs at the time, where as a track record is against whatever the holder is nominated against, i do acknowledge that Brett Lee broke track records against some mighty fine greyhounds.
I rate Rapid Journey as number 1 & Brett Lee as number 2 of all time, and not much between them.
Warren, there would be plenty of dogs in Australia better than Miata. But yes she is brilliant.

Hi Craig, take your point but lets take a trip down Miata lane.. She to holds numerous track records, she holds them from 500m- 700m all over Australia. She has run records from on the pace, and off the pace, against the very best dogs Australia has to offer. I think the only thing that was to tarnish her is for mine I would have attempted and probably succeeded to take out a Melbourne Cup or a Goden Easter Egg before I stepped her up in distance, then if she was able to do either or even both she would undoubtedly be the highest prizemoney earner and for mine undoubtedly be given the mantle of "The greatest Greyhound in at the very least Australia but probably the world" the only reason I holdback in saying "the worlds best" is because by posting this thread I have learnt by many people far more knowledgable than I am that there were some absolute champions of yesteryear, but for mine ghe best greyhound ive seen is Miata and I dont say that lightly because even in the last 20 years there have been some sensational greyhounds race. Tbh Craig the best greyhound ive ever seen race but didnt get a a whole lot of chance to put it together but on raw ability was Just the Best and another amazing dog that unfortunately caused her own demise but was loaded with talent was a dog most would not of heard and her name was Fool to Cry. I seen her race with my own eyes and I assure you she was the fastest dog Ive ever seen, but unfortunately she was a fighter and that bought about her demise.

All good points Warren, but 6 Group 1 successes does it for me with Rapid Journey.

So, how would dogs that race well in 6 dog fields go in 8 dog ones and vice versa?
At her best, Flying Amy was pretty special but I think Miata WILL be there sometime.

im a huge miata fan. when she first started out she was trialing with a dog called yunder up miss she was only a length off miata till her 3rd start and broke down badly. hasnt been the same dog since but i reckon vintage blend would come very very close to miata if she actually tried.

Warren,
I know you weren't looking for U.S. dogs, but since Downing was mentioned I thought I would throw in Real Huntsman. EXTERNAL LINK

Loved Kantarn Bale...
But of what I have read, I would love to have seen this boy racing in the flesh...
