If they had no straight or box work beforehand 19.50 or better
If they had work up the straight and out of the boxes beforehand 19.20 or better
Those were times of about 3 years ago...so track may be playing different now

yer i used him a couple of times and you would like under 19.50 but if they go a little slower dont panic first up sometimes they are very sore and some improve outersight when trailed down the track.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm asking as I saw this dog advertised with the following info. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it would be worth pursuing or of anything to be aware of.
Whelped 6 DEC 2011 Price 4000 Comment Well bred young dog for sale. Recently broke in at Cudal 5 weeks ago, running 19.27.
Been in the spelling yards last 2 weeks.
Your chance to purchase a ready made dog not far off racing.
A once off only offer at $4000.

Humdrum broke in 18.95 I had another sprinter broke in quicker it all depends if they go on with it after they get home $4k seems reasonable. Pearl Irene and Pleiades broke in 19.50 go figure.

ring dennis barnes and get his opinion on the dog in question 19.27 with work is nit as good as 19.27 without denis barnes is in the phone book.
5 weeks spelling with no work would raise some questions for mine also independent vet check a must. Also rock hard fit or even hakf race fit to the eye pass

What times would be acceptable for Break Ins to be competitive at TAB tracks in the current market?
I realise that there are different contributing factors like age, fitness etc.

I send dogs with straight work. No box work. 13 months old. Happy with anything under 19.50. Some of my best have broken in in the 19.40's. Some have broken the 19 mark and only been 300m sprinters.

Just shows you really do need to know your approach to breaking in, what your expectations are realistically based on preparation and the pups and their nature at breakers.
I broke in two there 19.28 and 19.31 and ave tab class dogs only.

So very low 19s would be classed as above average country? I know break in times are only a guide and pups need to improve to even make the track.

i think its time , long over due. that the clock is turned off at these joints ,,
and they start educating dogs to box and chase instead of leading people up the garden path of this time is city class this time is country , and this time is death , ,
its part of the industry that needs a major clean up , we have had good breakers in vic , but Alas greed has overtaken most of them , and the job just inst being done and dogs are being ruined because of it , some who were happy to do 10/12 at one time , are now doing 20/30 same place ,same facilities , same staff , now doing a shit job , but a bigger bank balance , we hear a lot about welfare , its time these joints came under some close scrutiny because they ruin a lot of dogs ,
