I was trying to remember the name of a medical group mentioned here a few times. Hemo-pets or something like that.

I was tracking down Bella's litter mates and found out one was recently adopted to that group to be a blood donar for the next few years.

I was curious how that worked and do they use the dogs for anything else?

Any information would be great. Maybe a web site.

I would really like to know when he is done with his work if me being back here on the east coast would make it impossible to adopt him.

His name is Polars Artic Cat. The one I should in an earlier post.

Thanks,
Bobbi

Bobbi - both mine came from Hemopet in Garden Grove, California.
Do you know if that's the one? How did you find that out? They stay at Hemopet for 18 months giving blood and then they're rehomed. That's why they were able to do the 4 months' quarantine stuff that Hawaii requires. A regular adoption group is reluctant to kennel or foster for 4 months waiting for the adoption, let alone fulfill the quarantine requirements!! If Hemopet in Garden Grove is the one I have the email contact for the adoption person there - let me know!

Is his name spelled properly? The search doesn't find him.

Bobbi, did you mean to say Greys Arctic Cat? Bella is Greys Polar Cat, right? 13F-17279?

CLICK HERE

If it's "Artie", have you been to this site to trace him? Click on the "Adopteds" and go down a row or two.

Hemopet is one of several locations that process dog blood donations, so I don't know if you've talked to the Race the Winds group in Wichita.

Good luck!

They did not tell me which location he went to but they did tell me he went to Hemo pet. I had emailed them inquiring about his location so that maybe we could contact them in reference to the pups being litter mates. So they emailed me back and informed he was sent to Hemo pet. That is all the infomation they gave me.

Bobbi - the only Hemopet, per se, that "Googles" is the one in Garden Grove, California where Aires and Sweeper came from. Contact them with the details - I know they'll be glad to help if he's there.

Contact person is Betty DeLa Rosa -
email is [email protected]
or you can phone her which might actually be better:

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Yes Wayne and Susan that is the right location and the right dog. I just received an email from the lady at the rescue group in ref. to Artie. He was not able to sit long enough for blood draws and will be going back to the rescue group some time next month. Now she wants to know if we can work things out if I am interested in adopting him. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!! What is a woman to do????

The thing to do is let Hemopet pay the cost of transporting Artie back to Wichita, or - better yet - transporting him directly to you! Actually, he'll probably be better back at the group in Wichita where he can get some fostering for a little while. It'll make life much easier for you if your adoption goes through. It'll be great to get the brother and sister back together like you hope. Kansas to California to Kansas and then Virginia - quite the traveler, that Artie.

He has been at the rescue group recooperating from a broken hock. That happened last August. I still need to get answers from them in ref. to his personality and if he gets along with small dogs. Mostly I have to talk to the family, (da hubby) specifically! She told me they really do not have any space for him right now so he won't be coming back to them until the middle of March. I think it would be way too much for him to do a long haul straight from Calf. to Virginia. Don't you?

Are you suggesting I fly him home or I fly out to meet him and then fly us home?

Either way, Bobbi - whatever's best for you!! Sweeper and Aires flew here from LAX - Hemopet took care of getting them there etc. - I had to provide the crates and pay the plane fare of course - if you do that use Continental - they do the best animal transport and also the cheapest if I recall correctly.

DH wants to drive to Kansas to meet Artie before we actually commit to adopting him. In all honestly I agree with him. It's a long trip but there is no way I am going to bring another dog in to the pack with out meeting him first. I still need to know if he is small dog friendly. I know the big dogs can work out a pecking order but the little ones, especially Abbey needs a little more protection. She is the tiniest cow dog I have ever seen! She only weighs 9 lbs.

A shade less than 1400 miles each way, so a minimum of two heavy driving days out, two days back, not including time in Wichita.

Travelocity shows several major airlines offering connecting flights between Norfolk and Wichita for about $300 RT or less, but all of them except American operate regional jets on at least one flight segment, so the dog probably cannot fly on them. Here's the skinny on American's pet policy. Note the crate size limitation applying to MD-80s (S80s) because that's the aircraft they use on Norfolk-Chicago-Wichita. The maximum kennel size, then, would be the series 400 measuring 36L x 24W x 26H. Also note the outside temperature restrictions. The $100 charge doesn't sound too bad.
