Last evening, there was a devastating fire, believed to be arson, at Manchester Dogs Home. The local community has rallied magnificently, donating food and equipment for those who have been rescued. Sadly, many have perished. Not sure what the position is regarding greyhounds but would guess that some do pass through this home. Knowing that followers of this website are true "doggie" folk, if anyone can spare a pound or two for the rescue fund set up by Manchester Evening News, please visi EXTERNAL LINK or text MDOG57 followed by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 pounds to 70070. Let's show our support at this time of need - every little helps.

I believe that the RGT have offered to take any greyhounds.

A terrible and such despicable act that beggars belief , too many dogs have lost their lives , the number is reported to be between 40 and 60 which I'm sure will be clarified as soon as possible. The local community and animal lovers in general have been rallying around to help in whatever way possible , and out of this tragedy have come some heartwarming stories - like the one of two men breaking through some kennel areas to help save twenty or so that would surely have perished. Fund raising is going great , but so much will be needed to get the place up and running again. I believe a 14 year old boy is currently being held and questioned over the fire which is understood to have been started deliberately.

Thanks for that, Di and Douglas. Glad to hear that RGT may be involved. Yes, there have been some heartwarming stories. In fact, the respone "on the ground" from local people has been amazing. Let's hope the fund-raising doesn't run out of steam. A fantastic amount so far - at least 750,000 pounds for the Manchester Evening News appeal at last count.

That's brilliant, in such a short space of time. Please keep an eye on this topic and I, with help from anyone else who is kind enough to contribute, will try to keep you posted as to developments and regarding any practical help which people, particularly in the area, may be able to give as events unfold. Many thanks for your interest.

Just seen it confirmed that two dog-loving builders have offered their skills for free to help rebuild the dogs home. Last night, the Manchester Evening News appeal topped one million but much more is needed - the nominal target is five million. Have yet to discover latest concerning "gifts in kind" (food, bedding, etc.) but if anyone living locally has anything they think may be useful, suggest they check first what is required and where to take it - an excess of some items can be almost as much of a headache to organizers as too little.

Further to my last posting, Cheshire Police have asked would-be helpers and adopters not to traval to the dogs home because so many are trying to get there that the roads are becoming blocked! For first-hand information, please visi EXTERNAL LINK Please, please keep those monetary donations flowing. Many thanks.

Suspect vehemently demies setting home alight but, having done police work, I know these little blighters will swear black is white when it suits. Reports that he may haave suffered a dog attack. Prompts question as to what he was doing for that to happen. Having had my elbow bitten through to the bone by the sweetest of greyhound bitches in whom I had, quite innocently, provoked a moment of panic, thses things do happen.I did not burn down my own kennels in retaliation! Nor did I fall out with the bitch - we went on to have many happy times together.
On a lighter note, more heartening stories emerging from this tragedy. Over 3000 people/businesses have offered their services in rebuilding - temporary kennels due to go up yesterday. All bar one of the rescued dogs have been fostered, including "Badger", a lovely black lurcher (looks just like a greyhound) who beat the odds to survive "death row". The local church has held a service for both humans and dogs in memory of the victims.

Update: yesterday, staff from the dogs home expressed their heartfelt thanks to those who have responded to the Manchester Evening News appeal, in wwhatever way. I should like to add my thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to read my postings. Hopefully, some good may spring from this terrible tragedy. The money raised will enable the Manchester home to rebuild modern kennels at its longstanding site, to continue its good work to an even higher standard. In temporary kennels provided by Battersea, the recovery is under way.
