I have taken Colour Code Kate into my family. She fetched up in the pound in terrible condition aged 9. Rescued and given a new lease of life by M J at Orchard tho she was not there long

However just looking at her GD page suggests her life was something different than neglect and that she might have been the victim of "relatives".

She raced at Waterford and she was owned and bred by a Mr George Starmer who bred her mother, her grandmother, her great grandmother and bought in her GG grandmother in 1983.

He didn't even trial her till 20 months and despite a very limited ability ran her 15 times till her last race at 4.5 years old. He then kept her for a further 2 years before breeding her

This doesn't sound like a man who would abandon a bitch to the pound.

Just trying to get to the bottom of the story. Have asked at Waterford Track and they are looking into it for me.

She was bred to Archaten Pine in 2011 so David Jordan may know Mr Starmer.

Hope I can turn something up - over to you!!!

Any news on littermates or Cheese Denise her dam, nice photo of her on GD in a big cosy dog bed.

I have the story now thanks to the team at Waterford track who put out the word.
Mr George Starmer is in his 80's and in a nursing home. He went there quite suddenly. He was very proud of what he thought of as "his" bloodlines even though it didn't really amount to much.

I KNEW this morning that she was missing someone. When my postman came and she heard a man's voice she was really upset and looking for him. This is what prompted me to look up the stuff on GD which tells a lot if you know how to read between the lines.

He rehomed her mother to Wales and kept Kate. He didn't drive and walked to the track every Saturday morning just to watch the goings on and taking Kate with him.

He didn't put her into the pound. In fact he didn't have time to do ANYTHING, so quick and unexpected was his departure. She only raced at 50 lbs and weighs 47 lbs now and looks thin. I have it that when she went to the vets from the pound, they thought she was well enough to neuter etc. and she weighed in at 47 lbs there. If she was a burly 80lb coursing dog then a few pounds would hardly show but she is a tiny little bitch and can hardly afford to lose an ounce. No wonder she looked like a long term cruelty case. She was just the victim of circumstance.

I am delighted to have this information and to restore her kennel name to her. She is called Kate not Gracie and the light comes into her eyes when I say her name. I guess she's thankful that the penny finally dropped with the humans. (Sigh)

She has a home for the rest of her life with me barring accidents of course. A happy ending!! :-))

I'd imagine that Mr Starmer would be very relieved to know that Kate found a loving home. Like most things, there are always two sides to a story. Thanks for sharing it.

Lynda, someone is going to tell him she is alright this weekend when they visit him in the nursing home. I offered to take it further, photos etc, but got the impression that there probably won't be time.

Sad for him but happy for Kate! (and us)

It's good to hear when something is right for a change.

Hi Manis, I think we have taken tea together in my kitchen. Hope you are well and have found your perfect "breeding".

Katie is the only greyhound in my life now. I have my fat whippet who is no longer the eldest giving way to Katie in that respect, and I have a border collie, Alice whom I bought from Dumfries early last year when she was a little baby. Quite THE most intelligent dog I have ever had.

Gracefully - lol, very pun-ny :-))

I am delighted Lesley has her. Katie is in an A+ home....as all retired greyhounds should be.
