GAP is hands down the best adoption program in Aus.

....and just think how many more greys could be adopted if they had an adoption centre in Melbourne (Seymour is over an hour drive from the city).......

Gap Seymour is a good facility. Why would we want to spend millions to have one in the city ? I'd say anyone wanting to adapt would be quite happy to drive one hour on a freeway from melb , and now dogs can be booked into the programme at quite a few centres/ tracks around the state. The gap programme is one thing grv does well and dosent need negative comments. Just my opinion.

Mark, you need to read a link before commenting,,,,,

"GAP is more accessible than ever, holding regular pre-assessment sessions at various locations across Victoria (Bendigo, Geelong, Lang Lang, Sale, Sandown, Seymour & Warrnambool).

The assessment locations will be expanding in 2015 to encompass more regional centres, and so eager is GRV and GAP to bring more greyhounds through its system that the number of pre-assessment sessions will also double in 2015.

Twice a week GAP will be on the road testing and collecting greyhounds."

GAP are a credit to the industry.
Rich.

Not negative.......just an observation, or a suggestion if you will....
ALL of the big animal adoption shelters have Melbourne centres. They adopt tens of thousands of animals.....because it is convenient and readily accessible for people.
If we could tap into that "market" then think of how much more exposure GAP could have, and how many more dogs could find furever homes!

Rich....you need to read my comments.
It's not accessibility for the industry that needs improvement....but for the public, the adopters.

People lead busy, hectic lives. We are all time poor. A 3-5 hour round trip for people living in suburbia is a significant disincentive.....especially when they can find any of a dozen other adoption centres within Melbourne.

Supply not keeping up with demand. Thats very encouraging for the industry assuming its ongoing & not just a seasonal demand.

If someone can't drive an hour to place their dog in GAP the world is far sadder than I personally thought.

and just to add rich, it would be one of the easiest one hour drives in australia ,, from eastern.western, northern, suburbs , you join the ring road/hume freeway , and can arrive at gap in seymour , with out encountering any traffic lights,, not even a stop sign, no tolls to pay, could anything be easier ,and well done to GRV for providing and funding this facility , and i will be making use of it on monday , and have used it in the past

Just for your information: GAP has an agreement with the RSPCA and dogs coming through GAP, go to various adoption shelters throughout Victoria to give the Greyhound breed more exposure. The adoptees will pay the RSPCA the adoption fee required and GRV/GAP reimburses the difference. So no, A potential adopter does not need to go to Seymour. It is a central location. Plus the added bonus is that there are many gap walks organised which helps to give the breed exposure and these people then direct potential adopters to GAP.

That's brilliant....and exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of.

If GAP can't afford or find their own stand-alone Melbourne facility, then the next best option is to place dogs in other shelters.

Anything that exposes the breed to more people and which also makes it easier for people to view and adopt the dogs is going to make a big difference.

Well done.

Seymour 1 hour from the freeway on the ring road entrance + 1 hour to the southern suburbs on a good run so that's 2 hours one way. That's also why the dogs have it over the trots (way out west) with the metro tracks in Melbourne northern and southern suburbs to cater for both.

Is a wonderful organisation and very well organised. They have looked after nearly all of our ex-racers finding homes for all of them very quickly. The few that fail their assessments get to live as our pets.

Robyn, we are in a society which sends a text from the kitchen to the kids in their bedrooms to tell them their tea is ready.
It is sad really.

Whilst it is an easy drive to Seymour, the industry needs to ensure that as many dogs as possible find a good home after retirement. if that means the industry bears extra costs to pick up & drop off dogs then GRV should bear the cost.

Personally i'd like to see all costs removed from the owner to place in the program eg the $100. Put the fees on registering a litter if the costs need to be recovered.
