Gain Dog Food are to be honoured at the National Greyhound Racing Awards on April 23rd in recognition of their work with Retired Racing Greyhounds.
It will be the first time for a company to receive an honour at the annual awards.
The statement issued by the Irish Greyhound Board reads:
GAIN Dog Food are to be honoured at the National Greyhound Racing Awards, in recognition of their work with Retired Racing Greyhounds. This is the first time a company will receive an honour at the ceremony organised annually by the Irish Greyhound Board.
The decision to award the company was driven by their support of events for Retired Greyhounds, having been one of the founders of the Retired Greyhound Shows in 2011. These shows were established to encourage the ownership of Greyhounds as Pets and highlight their docile nature.
Over the past five years, hundreds of greyhounds and their owners have taken part in the events. Having initially been part of the Irish Kennel Club show structure, the events have evolved to widen their reach beyond traditional Greyhound & Show Dog communities. Events in the West, South and North have already been held in the 2015/2016 series, with the East and All Ireland events due to take place over the coming weeks.
The events also serve to provide a social outlet for owners and their retired Greyhounds to meet, something which had not formally been in place previously.
GAIN Dog Food, a Glanbia PLC Company, operate from a Head Office in Portlaoise and have been a long-time supporter of the Greyhound Industry in Ireland in all its guises.
The Greyhound Welfare Award was a new addition to the Awards categories last year, when it was awarded to Bridget Frank and Lilian Mazola.
The National Greyhound Racing Awards will be presented to all category winners on Saturday 23rd April at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. The Irish Greyhound Board has been recognising the stars of its sport annually since 1965, when Ballyowen Chief was awarded Greyhound of the Year.
