Why should it take nearly seven months for a spot to become avaliable, Today I callled the Gap to enq about three poss placements after they had not returned my call i rang back in the afternoon the next spot wouldnt be until the 5th March???? as soon as i heard this i knew that that date wouldnt be an option. There would only be one other option for these very good girls. It was very upsetting that the greyhound industry and the government funds this program and yet it is almost impossable for suitable dogs to get on the programe.!!!!!Dose the general public and tax payers know of this?????? As soon as we breed a litter of pups should we call the gap to reserve three spots in sixteen mths time
What a shame....

I think you have to be realistic here.

If the wait is seven months then obviously there are not enough foster carers and not enough people willing to adopt. Too many dogs. Simple.

The owner is responsible. Either book in early and wait it out or have them put down. Every owner should be prepared for this when they breed or purchase a dog. You can't possibly expect that when you've just decided your ready for them to go someone else will be happily waiting and ready to take them.

Please dont think that putting your healthy greyhound down is an option. this is what we are trying to prevent. We are doing as much as we can to try and help the people who are willing to help their greyhounds but the fact is there are just too many dogs being bred and not enough future planning happening. The owners of each dog need to have a future plan for their racers. Easier said then done but it needs to happen or else this industry is going look a bit silly to the public. We need your help as trainers and owners to get the word out about your dogs and talk up greyhound adoption as well. Maybe if we can ask for more funding we could have a smoother running adoption program. These are tough times for everyone but we all need to plan for each and every greyhound that you have. Not just their racing career.

That's a bit hard when GAP don't even have a Facebook Page (SA and the NT do)!!!

I know of anti's that regularly post photos of dogs for adoption from various pounds and rescue shelters....and they nearly always get an instant response and the dog finds a home.
So many greyhound people are on Facebook. If we all had a GAP page we could "like" and that had adoption details we could share then there would be a hell of a lot more people out there aware of GAP and would possibly consider a Grey next time they are considering a new dog.
GAP need a bigger profile....and I personally believe that any increase in traffic to their website would have huge benefits.
Go look at some of the profiles online......it makes me want to adopt......and I've got more than enough retirees here already!

It costs nothing to register with GAP, and if you do breed then it would be prudent to register as early as possible to alleviate the wait.
I did this and was able to place my retired racer within 3 weeks.
Unfortunately if you don't plan and then get upset because others have, then I think thats a bit rich!!.
Don't blame others for your lack of planning.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Thats my opinion FWIW.

There's a good story about Todd McKennie and his two adopted greys in this week's Woman's Day - maybe that will help to raise the profile of the GAP program.
