John, people use all sorts of oils for their dogs. We use cod liver oil one day and flaxseed/linseed oil the next, etc., so it's really a personal choice.

i have a very fussy broodie wont eat weetbix or toast for breekie plus at night i give her a kilo of mince beef plus her kibble and she pics at it i also give her chicken necks 2 a day plus her vitamins am i doin something wrong very very fussy hasnt losy weight still 32.6 kilos any advise or help gratfully taken on board regards

Tried gravy John? Or vegemite melted in hot water. My brood was pretty fussy, we just changed it up a bit. Even make a chicken stock to pour on her food. Or lightly cook the meat. And if all else fails, a thickshake from Maccas.

John, is she pregnant, or in her milk period after a season at all? If she is, it is quite common for them to go off their food for a while. She also really doesn't need quite so much daily food, especially if she is rather inactive. A chronic tonsil/throat infection will also cause this problem you are having with her. Check and see if she has a problem here, or if you can't yourself, take her to a vet, as if she does, she will need antibiotics anyway. This is a somewhat common problem and does affect their eating habits,( and their form if they are racing.) You can feel the lymph gland under and at the back of the lower jawbone, one on each side. An infection will cause these glands to become very large and can be easily felt. Also check there is nothing, such as a bone or stick, jammed across the teeth on the roof of her mouth, or a bad tooth. Hope this helps ? We have our broodie, the dam of Dalgetty, here in a run, and she gets one and a half pounds of meat and six to eight ounces of kibble at night. She cleans up everything she is fed, ( treats included, ) doesn't refuse anything and is in very good condition.

carole no shes not preg just came of antibiotic for 5 days he said she had good teath and coudnt find too much wrong with her i went to a local vet may have to go to greyhound vet one who deals alot with them

John, if you have any injectable B complex vitamins, give her an injection of 3 lots of 2 mls, each two days apart, to pick her up after the antibiotics, and to replace the flora in the gut that is destroyed by the antibiotics. This may also help her appetite. Is she a big bitch or is she overweight ? If she is overweight, try cutting her food down a bit, as she might be getting too much for her current level of activity, resulting in her not feeling too hungry. Most dogs love liver, so if she is still not eating properly and seems healthy enough, get some dried liver or liver balls and crush it up fine. If you sprinkle a bit on her food, mix it in well, it just may stimulate her appetite, as I have never known a greyhound knock back liver ! Anyway good luck, try it and see if it makes a difference.

Hey Susan. From my experiences it doesn't really matter what ya feed ya retired ex-racers cos all my previous K9's would eat ANYTHING I put in front of em ! Ha. NO B.S ! As long as ya feed em up plenty of bulk cos after racing they will lose muscle tone etc etc try 2 keep ya daily feeding times & amounts pretty much the same cos K9's love the same daily routine + it keeps them emptying out, kidney functions etc etc the same day after day regular etc without any problems , so keep up the variety of tucker ya feed including protein,fats,carbs,fibre, dry food & fluid content at a decent % level in their regular diet + raw bones once every 2wks or so + keep up ya regular worming routine etc & ya can't go wrong in my book. I've got an ex-racer at home now at the moment & she is AOK being fed basically whatever I put in front of her & plenty of it & she is nearly 9yrs old & NEVER being sick a day in her life ! John i have a retired bitch at home,4 1/2 yrs weighs 32kg that i couldn't get to eat much but the whole litter when rearing wern't great eaters so i got some collovet from garrads up here at albion park+she eats everything now.On the label it says 8ml a day but 4ml twice a day is what it says later on when u read the lot.I think a kilo is way to much for her going by what mine eats.My bitch gets 400gram of coles kangaroo,250gram of chunkers from coles made by VIP,various veges cooked+850gram all up then add some of the water from the veges.I have a 100gram of kibble sitting there at all times for her when she decides she wants more.She doesn't chew briskett bones to well so every wed she gets a chicken frame but necks or wings just as good.Within a week she was eating well+i weaned her off the morning dose a ml a week+she gets her 4ml mixed in her tea at night.Every arvo i go out+throw her rope+she plays until she's had enough+she looks a treat so worth a go.
