If Bella was in Australia and she was "cat friendly", I'd take her.

Hi Karen,i am watching this thread about Bella,i was thinking about having her but my Bare is having problems at present and i don't think it fair to him yet, but, don't think i am saying no,i'm just letting Bare get a little better first. He is 11 this year and she would be good company for him.
Kathy
looking forward to seeing her pics.

Hi again Karen, any luck with Bella yet?I am interested, just hope Bare gets a bit better soon.If i do go for her there will be no need for a house check,i will give you the phone number of their trainer,he has been here several times, all is ok,and we have two 100 foot gardens, all 6ft fencing around both and very secure.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Are you going to try for Bella then Wayne?lovely if you did,I was thinking about it but i am having a few health problems with my Bare at present and i don't want to bring another one in while he is like this.

Bella wouldn't be in the picture for us since we're in the U.S. Come the time for another greyhound, Kathleen, we'll be adopting locally. There are several adoption groups in the Chicago area and they almost always have one or two older dogs needing homes.

Oh, sorry, Wayne - was that your Maine Coon? You must be as gutted as I was/am when Sweetie Girl went.

Our Maine Coons have a lot of years left in them, Susan. Marley is three, Monty is two and Mitzi is nine.

The old girl who just passed away at 18-1/2 was a "semi-Siamese" named Molly, who in the last couple years was deaf as a post but otherwise in good health. She had a runty littermate named Maggie who died at age 16. Interesting that Maggie had another sensory loss - she was blind in her last years but still managed to find her way around the house very well.

(As you might gather - we're in a rut - the cats' names all start with M. A shelter cat named Mandy rounds out the current roster of four.)

Molly started to fail rather quickly about 10 days ago, not eating or drinking, becoming dehydrated, sleeping almost all the time and moving very little. It was very interesting and surprising to see how solicitous the other cats became - coming up close and sniffing. Clearly by scent or behavior, they knew something about Molly was not normal. She was still responsive, though weak, as she lay and I stroked her early on her last morning. We had a quiet leave-taking then, and at the vet's she went peacefully to her rest in my lap.

The vet agreed that Molly's elderly system was just shutting down and we believe we made the decision at the right time to forestall any suffering. Some things could have been done to extend her life, but it would only have been a matter of days and probably with her quality of life continuing to deteriorate. Naturally there's some sadness here but no regrets. Our seven-year-old grandson had really bonded with Molly and took it the hardest - his first time experiencing the loss of a pet relationship. Molly had a great disposition and a long life well lived. It was time.

Hi Kathy,

Bella is still here.

Your setup sounds ideal for Bella - she would love it!

Where abouts are you in UK?

She is not housetrained as she has been in kennels all her life. She is also a bit tubby at the moment - she likes her food!

I hope Bare gets better soon.

If you are able to take her that would be fabulous but if not, don't worry I will wait until we can find her the perfect home.

She won't be going anywhere that won't love her and give her the retirement (and sofa) she deserves!

Her racing name is Fiesty Daisy.

Regards

Karen

Hi Karen,
I am sure Bella would love it here,we are in Reading,Berkshire, not a bad area.
I would'nt worry too much about her not being housetrained,I will soon show her the way,i'm quite sure she will follow the others.I really cannot say yes right now as Bare must get all my attention at present, but as soon as things are looking up.and i am sure they will,i will be in touch.
In the mean time,if a good home comes along for her,put her first, don't worry about me,she is more important.
Ranger and Roundy have big tummies so she won't look out of place.
best wishes
Kathy

Hi Karen, what a lovely picture of Bella, she is identical to my Bare.
I cannot say how long Bare will take to improve, looks like being a long job,not only with his tummy but he will now need more teeth out after his course of antibiotics,i must get him better first.
I will keep a watch on this thread to see how it goes for little Bella.
best wishes
Kathy

Hi Kathleen

I hope Bare gets better soon - it's awful when they are not well!

Bella really is a 'lady' and only needs to be loved.

I'll keep you informed.

If anyone has a space on their sofa for Bella PLEASE get in touch.

Karen

Lovely black coat.

I think you should stress too that 8yrs is NOT that old for a GH! She easily has at least 5yrs or more left in her and plenty of activity for any family that takes her in.

My Evie will be 9yrs this October and is still full of piss n vinegar - so is her housemate Tara, who will be 10yrs in July.

She is lovely is'nt she Cindy,My Bare is 11 in November, having a few problems, but he has more go in him than the other two we have.

Karen, she is a lovely looking girl,Bare seems to be eating a little better but still having other problems with squatting and the runs, think the antibiotics are doing that,i have to give him a week after the antibiotics, which he finishes tomorrow, then book him in to have a big back tooth out.
I look at Bella and see so much of her in Bare.
I will be keeping a watch on Bella, let me know how it goes.
All the best
Kathy

Kathy, give Bare some plain yoghurt or Yakult, if they sell it over there, as this will help his GI tract while on the antibiotics. They often make dogs loose while on a course of them.

Hi Kathleen,

All the dogs at the kennels get 'live' yoghurt for a few days after a course of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad and live yoghurt helps to re-populate the gut with the good stuff.

Hope he is well soon.

Regards

Karen

Hi Kathy,

Yes, she was kept after racing as a brood - her last litter will be around 18 months old now. That is the reason she is still in kennels and not on a sofa at her age...

However, her owner has decided that he no longer wants to breed from her - that's why I am desperately looking for a home for her.

Karen
