I told Gina months ago I could take him, but then more urgent cases kept coming in. I am overflowing with dogs right now.
Carole, where are you located?
When a dog has that level of fear, there is no getting through to them with any kind of treat. They are in a place in their heads that just does not recognise treats. They are in a true fear mode.
Forgot to add that I focus on finding homes for greyhounds in Ireland. It is a thankless uphill battle. When you finally find an Irish home wanting a greyhound, their family and friends tell them they are mad. Many people have the idea that a pet dog lives on a 6 ft chain attached to a dog house at the back of the garden 24/7 and food gets brought to it once a day. I don't adopt my greyhounds to such people. So finding the people who actually LET a filthy, dirty, nasty, cross, hyper, dangerous nervous "vicious killing machine" inside their HOME is just not an easy job.
I usually adopt out about 20-25 dogs a year. Most rescues which don't have greyhounds adopt dogs a few times a week.
I spend literally hours with each possible adopter who comes here. It is a lot of work.
Hi I live in Mullinahone 5 minutes drive from Gina, Tommy can stay with me for as long as it takes. I know exactly what you mean about how greyhounds are thought of here in Ireland, I knew it was bad but did not realise how bad until I actually moved here and got involved with Gina. Tommy is a great dog wonderful in every way except for his fear of the car.
Thanks Jeff never heard of D.A.P but will contact the vet in the morning and see if he has heard of this, if not will ask friends in the uk to see if they get this for me. Anything worth a go. Tried other herbal remedies but did not work.
We have 2 retired Irish girls at home.Every Bonfire Night we use the DAP plug in and it really helps, apparently it gives out the smell of a lactating mother and calms the dogs as it reminds them of happier times!
Hi Jeff, phoned the vets this morning they do both the plug in and the collars, I do not think the plug in will be any good so have orders the collar pick it up Monday, not cheap just under 36. but if it does the trick then Tommy can be rehomed. Will let you know how it goes (fingers & toes crossed).

I bet Caesar Millan would have some suggestions! He seems to have solutions to every other dog problem!
Hi Kathleen, I got the collar that Jeff sugguested. I bring the van over to the Kennel compound every day and put him into one of the cages and his kennel mate in the cage next to him, as of Sunday he was still like a quivering jelly - but to my surprise yesterday he jumped straight into the cage, and I gave him a treat, so fingers crossed this might be the first hurdle over. I will leave it a few days then take him for a short run out.
Im sure your doing this Carole...........but the van should now be the place where he gets all his food...........and a bone to chew daily.
Give him a few days with the engine running for 5 mins ....then feed him in the van. progress to moving the van a short distance.....then feed him...........youll get there....good luck.
Great work is done by these ladys..........while they sometimes seem hard on us pure greyhound folk.........we must remember that they see badly treated dogs every day and it upsets them.
Hi Yvonne Thanks for your feed back yes I am going to follow these steps, and fingers crossed we will get this lovely lad a good home.
On another note Suzie the abandoned fawn bitch who I took from Gina in April, has fully recovered had to loose her tail as it was in such a bad state, but she is now on her way to Sweden, to become a family pet of a school teacher who also has a male greyhound.
Hi Carole, that's great news, let's hope he will soon get over his fear and find a loving home. He's a lovely looking lad, won't take long to get him a home.Your doing a great job.Take care Kathy. ps.let us know how he gets on please.

Understandable really
LOL Yvonne, you won't get purer 'Greyhound folk' than Carol and her husband. They have been breeding, training and racing greyhounds for years. Carol boards our 'Special needs' dogs because she knows more about greyhounds than I will ever know. She is not a rescue.
So when his profile says he "hates" cats - are we talking hates to eat them without a lovely glass of wine to wash them down - or hates that they sneak up and scare the #$%^& out of him?
Hi Cindy if only that were possible, do you know anyone with a private jet who would cuddle him all the way to you? Tommy is a real gentlman he is kenneled with one of my retired girls who will be 10 in October and he loves to run about the field with her. I do not know about cats this must have come from his previous owner, but then all greyhounds will chase a cat outside their own domain. I knew of someone that had a greyhound for a pet he hated cats outside but the family cat used to sleep on his back, and when the cat died he would not eat for 2 days they had to get another and they became great friends still to this day as far as I know.
