I am looking after a male greyhound for Gina(PAWS) he was in a bad car accident with his owner and is now terified of travelling. I have tried him several times in our Van with his kennel mate and others and also in my car but he is frightened on getting into either and just pants all the time so a long journey is out of the question, and you cannot rehome greyhounds in Ireland, so he would be rehomed abroad, but until he can overcomes his fear he is'stuck with me.' He is such a happy dog and has no other bad faults, it is such a shame. Can anyone come up with anything???

Hi Carole

Can you break it down by maybe using high value treats to feed him by the van then when he's settled and confident -in the van then when the engine is going then moving a few feet etc etc ... no pressure and all the time that he needs. I'd also try something like Rescue Remedy or Dorwest Herbs calmers such as Valerian and Skullcap which you can get in a liquid to take the edge off his fear. Maybe also try sleeping on an old tee shirt then putting it on him (front legs thro arm holes, head thro neck) so he can smell you all around him which may help giving him confidence ...

Good luck

Julie

This poor boy is with us 12 months in August. He is a super dog in every other way. It's a terrible pity an Irish home is not there for him CLICK HERE

Hi Julie thanks for the suggestions will have a go at getting skullcap etc. if that is possible here in Ireland. I have tried him in the van just leaving him sitting in the cage with his kennel mate in the next cage, and leaving the back and side doors open so he can see me working around the kennels he does relax a bit but will not eat titbits while in the van and cannot get out quick enough when released, and goes charging round the field like a mad thing.

Given how he remembers his bad experience, Farmer Tom certainly qualifies as a special needs dog. If the concern is that it would be too upsetting for him to be transported to Italy, consider also that wherever he is adopted - Ireland or Italy or elsewhere - he's going to have big-time problems if his family wants to drive him around. Is it possible to find a home where he wouldn't have to ride in a vehicle much?

Hi Carole

If you can't get the Dorwest herbs stuff email me at [email protected] and I'll post some to you. We have some greys come to our training classes that can't cope at first but we find if you persevere they usually settle tho they haven't had trauma like a car crash :=( You might find that if you put his mates in the can in cages then get him and put him in the van for a moment whilst you hold him then let him calmly jump out and then let him go (offer him high value treats thro out but I bet he won't be able to eat) you may find that because you let him out and don't ask him to stay in for more than a split second then he begins to realise it's ok especially if he can have liver, chicken, cheese etc etc whilst he's in there ... a fluffy aqueaky toy may help too.

Good luck

J x

Hi Wayne that would be an impossibility you cannot home greyhounds in Ireland the majority of Irish consider they are only there to do a job then they are got rid of some in horific circumstances. It only just recently that a few trainers and owners are handing them over to the rehoming centres. If the registration of ownership and transfer of ownership was stricter and penalties imposed then just maybe they might become more responsible, but the powers to be do not to anything - maybe one day the s!!! might just hit the fan

He's a lovely looking boy. I hope he can be helped with the car thing as he'll make a lovely pet for someone. It's understandable though isn't it after being involved in a crash. Good luck with him Carole and Gina xxxxxxxxx

i did read your comment curefully before i replyed but u gave wayne a one sided view of the rehomeing of greyhounds within ireland there are a lot of breeders and owners who have ex racers ex broods ex crousing dogs at home which makes it harder to rehome within ireland.

Honor you are still not getting the right picture and you are taking the subject away from my original thread. I was on about people outside the greyhound industry will not have a greyhound as a pet. When you said I gave Wayne a 1 sided view of the rehoming of greyhounds in Ireland - there is no rehoming in Ireland only outside Ireland. Ask any rehoming centre here in southern ireland how many greyhounds they have rehomed to people in southern Ireland I know the answer do you!!!

Hi Carole

I can see the point that Honor is making.

The majority of the owners and trainers that I know all have oldies around.

I think the material I have seen promoting the greyhound as a pet here in Ireland has been from the IGB.

Just a question, does Gina's or any of the other groups try to educate the Irish public about Greyhounds as pets

I know that money is tight for them, so maybe they don't and if so fair enough, but the impression you gave to Wayne is as Honor said , very one-sided.

I am sure Mary Jane will come in here and give a different opinion, but I am rehoming greyhounds as pets for 12 years and only three have been successfully rehomed in Ireland. Irish people do NOT see greyhounds as pets. The late John Carroll stated at a meeting in Limerick a couple of years ago, that in 20 years he had NEVER gotten a pet home in Ireland for a greyhound. Honor, Carol means non greyhound people adopting greyhounds as family pets.

Hi Helen
I went to an advertising agency in Dublin 6 yrs ago with DJ Histon and another gent from IGB, they had done the most wonderful posters advertising Greyhounds as Pets, (Free of charge) and they priced a campaign for the Newspapers etc.. IGB were not interested in investing in it. They have a page on their website and a DVD on application. So unless you are interested in racing, there is no campaign to promote Greys as Pets.

I do promote them when I can but I do not have the resources to do it nationwide. Carole was talking about non racing people not racing people.

Honor should know, her husband does our transport (I presume it is the same Honor McBride)

Now, can we get back to poor old Farmer Tom..........

As you say, Gina, back to Farmer Tom. Gina, what's your experience been with special needs dogs - especially with phobias against transport? Any way that you've seen to address the problem?

LOL Wayne, I addressed the problem by asking for Caroles help, It is she who started this thread asking for advice.

The only 'Special needs' we usually have is dog to dog agression, it causes us terrible problems because the european adoption groups find it very hard to place these dogs and we end up with them holding up a double kennel for months on end. We have a few at the minute; Slemish Tiger, Queenies Panther, Oldbridge Jack ( also with Carole). Farmer Tom is unique in his needs :0)
