We took Christine (Barley Queen) from Tipperary Pound. All was fine and she had a home booked in Switzerland through GACI. About a week or two after she was spayed, she started to regurgitate her food, so we took her to the vets where she was x rayed and scoped, they discovered a ring of fibrous tissue in her Oesophagus.
She was referred to the vet college in Dublin where she has been since last wed. They are doing balloon dilation which seems to be working but what will happen long term, they dont know.
It is a very strange case but also one which will incur costs of over fifteen hundred euro. If anyone knows anyone with a few bob to spare can they pass this on. Cheques can be made payable to the veterinary college to avoid the 'Black Hole' of the PAWS account.
Thank you

Hi Kathleen, I spoke to her previous owner, who seemed disinterested, then I spoke to the trainer to see if there was a previous history of this, his response was. 'No, she was a fine dog but she turned her head on the track, so the only place for her was the Pound' (Quote) I told him that there was no need for that anymore as there were places like ours around now and his response was 'Sure we know nothing about ye' No point in having a conversation with someone with that attitude. I may add he is local.
As usual (as with some high profile dogs we have had here this year) it will be left to 'True' greyhound lovers to pick up the tab.

Gina did the Vet tell you what was likely to have caused the condition?

Well Sue, I have my suspicions that it happened during the spay as she was perfectly fine before that. Two vets have implied this ie; Trauma. But none of them are willing to speak out against another vet.

That's why I asked Gina as aspiration during anaesthetic is the most common cause, the Vet who desexed her would know that and would be aware that it happened.

Hi Gina, this poor lass has had a bad time has'nt she.Vets are like doctors, never admit to their mistakes, and will all keep quiet, same thing happened to my mum 41 years ago,the doctor over prescribed her heart tablets, did'nt find out until it was too late, she died. They all kept quiet then.
Back to this lass,if i can contact Yvonne i will send something for her and i do hope others will help her.Best wishes Kathy xx

this happened to a racer i bought from the north east, it had had something blocking the stomach lining and it had formed a rubber band type blockage and it had went rock hard only leaving 2cm for food to travel through.the last owner denied any knowledge but vet said it would have taken months to develope. my vet opened the dog up but would have had to take loads of stomach away to sort the damage and even then he said the dog might never come right so i had him pts while still under anasthetic. you have got to way up whats best for the dog in the long run and how if any his condition would have improved.the prognocise was not good so i made the humane decision

Think you made the right decision Andrew, the poor dogs quality of life would not have been good at all.The lass Gina is talking about is quite young, think she should at least have some treatment just to see what could be done.

I'm not looking to be controversial.

But if someone has a spare 1,500 Euro, then donate it to cancer research in human beings.

Or the McGrath foundation.
