As most of you know I have been looking after retired greys for over 30 years.I have rehomed many as well as keeping some at my home here in Cornwall. At the moment I have 2 retireds who never actually made it to the track.I have a boy called Dexter and a wee girl called Mouse, I also have an old Lurcher (Angus) who Ive had for 10 years.Angus has seen many retireds come and go over the years and never gets jealous or distressed about his new mates.
That is until Saturday just gone 16.01.2010.As usual I let the 3 dogs out for there run in my long garden, but to my horror I heard lots of screams, a noise I never wish to hear again. My two retired dogs which I got from trainers here , savaged poor Angus. My son and I managed to stop them , but it was too late ,Angus has unfortunately suffered severe injuries to his ears, back and chest. We took him to our vets who have done a marvelous job trying to save his right ear and infact his life. The next few days are going to decide his fate. Now I would never usually ask for help, but I feel at this point I need to .So if anyone here can help us with costs we would be very grateful. So far the vet bill is 434, however if his ear needs to be amputated it will be more. Also the cost of antibiotics might increase etc.Unfortunately I am awaiting an operation on my leg an am out of work at the moment. Please help if u can Thankyou all.Posted below is the awful pics of Angus and his injuries .Be warned they are not nice. If u can help please email me at [email protected] In the event of donations passing required amount for Angus the rest will be donated to the RGT Cornwall. thanks again.
ps If the photos have not been allowed or not showing ,I can email u them

Thanx Kathleen, yes she said that We can pay over the coming months.Unfortunately I dont have much spare cash after all my outgoings at present due to my accident (leg)I cant work right now.I have been intouch with a trust and sounds hopeful. The trouble is I think he might lose his ear , and there is a dredful smell now from his black wounds the antibiotics he is on dont seem to be doing much. so also more treatment required for him.Im not sure he will make it to be honest.Vets tomorrow at 4 we will know more then.He is also biting at his stitches...what a crap start to this year.

Very sorry to hear about Angus. I have just had a 330 vet bill for one of mine who got attacked by a loose staff, so I know exactly how you feel!! The only thing that I can say is that if you are not working, then surely you would be able to use the PDSA or RSPCA which would be a lot cheaper for you - unfortunately, because I work that was not an option I had.
Good luck.
ps. I used a blow up elizabethan collar to stop my dog messing with his stitches, or there is the awful (in my opinion) buster collar (lampshade) that you could use, your vet should have supplied you with this.

John - Wounds DO SMELL BAD for several days due to dried blood and drying-up membranes, etc. The antibiotics take time to begin working....at least 24 hours, and at that point their help might not yet be observable for another 48 hours.

Stitching greyhound skin can be a problem....even stitches can make it tear again. Please go look at the thread by Fia Lloyd about her dog recently having been attacked. She and I emailed back and forth daily about treatment after there was some question about the way her vet was handling it. Her thread is in the Health section on the first page more than half way down, beginning with "Bad Attack....."

Recently I had to look after an extremely large wound here which my local vet attempted to stitch since he was here within 30 minutes after the event took place. After 5 days - and boy did it smell! - the dog accidentally tore it all apart and so new skin had to be grown over a large surface area. By changing the bandage every day and simply keeping the wound clean by irrigating it with seasalted water and covering it with Sudocrem-smeared gauze, it is now healed up. Not antibiotics were used, and there was no infection.

Chin up, and feel free to email me if you wish: [email protected]

Thanx Ruth, I was told that the pdsa will only help with bills if you contact them before the treatment which is daft coz it was an emergency.I have an address at the RSPCA to write to.I am also going to get help with any future costs from blue cross which is great.

CLICK HERE means full Account Name and not to forgett IBAN and BIC(SWIFT-code) and the Banks Name - needs to be fully correct, otherwise wouldn`t work from the Continent :-) Can`t give much, but many a little bit would work as well.
Good luck for you and Angus.

Hi John,

I e-mailed you yesterday on the first e-mail address you gave, did you receive it? If not I can write again on the second e-mail address.

I sent you some photos of my Grey Rosie and her wounds from six weeks ago to encourage you and show you how, with the right care, the wounds will heal, it really is amazing.

Follow all the advice Orchard Sanctuary give you, she really knows what she is talking about.

THE FIRST FIVE DAYS REALLY ARE THE WORST BUT KEEP YOUR CHIN UP!

Regards,
Fia

PS I just loaded the photos on to my profile, it shows the wound stitched, and then after the stitches broke, how it healed as an open wound.

Hi Fia, I just read your email, You have given us hope , as your dogs wounds are very similar to Angus.I have been cleaning them 2 times a day and they are looking better ,all exept the one on his back which runs down his side too.It really is a nasty one.It seems that the dead skin will soon be off and he will have a deep and open wound.I have already had to get him more antibiotics, its looking like a long haul to recovery for him. Thanks for all your encouragment , much appreciated. x

I used Botanica Natural Herbal cream (www.botanica.ie)(AMAZING stuff!!!) twice a day for three days, then Active Manuka honey (from Tescos)twice a day for two days follwed by one days rest, just drizzling sea salt water over the wound twice a day.

The Botanica is so soothing and really helps draw the wound together without loosing too much hair.

John washing the wound as often as you like with salt water works wonders, keeps the wound clean and kills germs. It is also vital to keep giving him the antibiotics as infection is the prime reason for failure.

Fia is definitely an expert on this now and a great example of the care and nursing required for success.

Just look at his sad eyes in the last picture, doesn't he look like a gentle giant. He is a beautiful boy John and I bet you are suffering as much as him, how could anyone not fall in love with that face.
