What is the significance of the name KELSOS? Many greyhounds have this as their first name. Many though not all of these greyhounds with KELSOS as a first name are also owned (or were owned) by John W. Kelly. Why KELSOS? Is it just something the owner came up with? Does the name have something to do with breeding?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Rose

Hello, Rose, "Kelsos" is a prefix used for dogs bred/owned primarily by John Kelly, as you said. I don't know how he arrived at the name, but prefixes are very common in NGA-registered greyhounds and may be reserved for a fee. Examples: most of the "Greys" dogs are bred/owned by Ernest J. Butler of Greymeadow Kennel; most of the "Flying" dogs are bred/owned by Flying Eagles Kennel, etc. You may also notice that there are dogs with "last names", bred/owned by the same person, for example "... Blair". The use of prefixes and "last names" makes it possible that the other part of the name can be used many times. "Gal", by itself, could be registered only once every 10 years, but there can be a Kelsos Gal, Flying Gal, Grey Gal or Gal Blair. etc. Best regards, Ilse

I cannot add much except possibly that John W. Kelly address is given as New Jersey. It was at the then famous Atlantic City racetrack that the great racehorse Kelso won his first race. John Kelly the Olympic Champion rower and father of Grace was one of the main shareholders in the racecourse. Not sure if there is any connection though.

Mugs.
