So the difference in the transport costs would mean 25 per dog (assuming 28), surely that wouldn't be too big a burden for adopters to take on as an additional cost?

Not the Adoptors Gill. The Organisation. An even more serious problem is 14 of the dogs to come from Limerick, that cuts out you guys that home direct.

just one question
where the money for the retired greyhound goes? where is this account report? Owners and Irish people that love greyhound do they have access to this report ? anyone can answer my question?
I spoke with loads of owners when I take their greyhound for rehoming and what I know is that every one spent money for this matter but very few have had their greyhound into a rehoming program en less they get in touch with us directly .
we are volunteers do not forget that we are not pay by no one in IEnot IGB not Paws pay us , for all we rehome 200 greyhound per year with 100 euro as a contribution per dog towards the transport and the cost of each transport is 5.500 euro.
I hope and I believe in good people , life its so precious and we save 200 lives per year..think about it

Gina why are you sidestepping the questions that need answers, I have no idea who Barry is. You had no problem (I assume without Barry's permission)in posting that your funding has been cut by 1000 per month but you have a problem posting how much you receive per month unless I get Barry's permission lol.

way we should ask more money from the adopters? way ? don't you think do we ask enough from people that drive for hundreds miles , open their house to a perfect stranger as it is a big dog , sometime old and sick? do we have to ask more ? no ..we can't

So just to clarify the matter as I am a bit thigh !

So a person in Italy, Hungary or somewhere else, who wants to adopt a Greyhound, will pay 100 to get a dog from Ireland and that's include Neutering, vaccination, transport from Ireland to xx, home visit and check ups, arrangement locally when dogs arrive and maybe several weeks kenneling before travel !

Lilian - the money that the owners here in Ireland pay to the RGT via the price money is administrated by the IGB and is used to run their own RGT kennels and subsidies the likes of PAWS and Cottage Rescue.

I paid 125 for a Jack Russell pup and had to pay neutering, vaccinations on top of that and pick him up myself! 100 for a grey with everything done seems a right good deal for the new owners to me especially as greyhounds are held in such high esteem in Italy?

Karin I perfectly understand as a matter of fact we rehome IRISH GREYHOUND not poodle LOL btw I believe everyone have the right to know the amount of the money that goes into this welfare account , where the money goes and the number of retired greyhound rehomed per year , the country where they were rehomed etc

Richard you are talking about a pups , a Jack Russell breed to be sail at the condition you know we are talking about Irish Greyhound , that means most of the time unwanted dogs just good to be p.t.s.instead of buying a J.R way dont you went for a lovely greyhound? Believe me they are the most wonderful companion ..

I.. will be back tonight to this interesting thread .. my job is waiting for me otherwise no money at the end of the month :-)

Karin, i don`t want to quarrel, realy hope to get you wrong...
We "Continentadopters" adopt dogs, others got the money for while they were able to race if they get unprofitable or just unwanted. Think about, wether you yourself would prefer as pet a puppy or a discarded greyhound, some without lead training, not house trained, unused to walk stairs, arthrotic...
Take a deep breath, befor telling someone, how much the dog should be paid for - adopters pay all the money into these dogs afterwards, you earned while theyr racing career - into vet-bills etc.
No need to quarrel, but think about what you are saying.

It is YOUR dogs, you are responsible for, you were earning money with (as breeder, trainer, whatsoever......). If you find someone, taking your "worthless" rescue-dogs anywhere in Europ as Irish people seem to be less interested, don`t ask for more money for them.
Think about, whether you`d rehome one of MY dogs, if the get for any reason "worthless" for me and would you be willing to pay for the transportation? Be true!

If anyone takes your (owners) money and not using it for what it was taken for, get that solved with you organisations, but that is NEVER going to be adopters problems.
We adopters do what we do without financial adantage, without the fun having a puppy at home, without the trill of races and betting..., only as we do think, a former racing dog may have a pleasant life with us after his racing days are over. The dogs cannot breed anymore as spayed/neutered. They must not be given to anyone without permission of the organisation if we have problems... We do our part, your dogs are those, who get theyr lifes solved through. Noone should ask in this game for my money over a seemly amount to provide abuse.

@ Richard Newell - nothing against racing, from my personal point of view, but the responsibility - for the dogs lifetime - need to be taken by the ownes in long term. Then nearly all the probs will be solved.
Noone normal is against racing IF the dogs do have a propper life, not only the few years they can go to the race.
But all here know, the problem is exactly that.
And Richard, for my puppy sighthound i paid over nearly 1000,-...

Monika,

The money the Irish owners pay towards rehoming their dogs when they retire, is collected by the IGB and anybody that wants to know can ask them, where the money went. It is not a secret ! Just give Barry Coleman a call.

I was only inquiring what the Adopters was paying towards the costs as I don't know.

And NONE of my dogs are as you put it "worthless" all are cared for all their life. Some are retired with me and some go through the rehoming system. But ALL are cared for. I pay for my dogs after they are retired via the IGB and my own pocket.

As to your statement that I have "earned money" on my dogs you must be joking !!!!!!

You have no idea what it cost to breed, rear, school and race a dog in Ireland. Very few dogs pay for them self throughout a racing career and only a select few will actually earn the owner money.

And yes I would pay for the transport and other costs if I wanted to offer a home to a dog ! I have just had a dog send over from Denmark to live out his life with me.

Monika

"you earned while theyr racing career"

If I had to live off what my dogs earned me in the last 20 years I'd be starved and homeless long ago!

As Karin says the vast majority do not pay for themselves.

O.k., i really don`t want to quarrel.
If there is an Industry, someone will have to earn something, otherwise there was no Industry...Who this is in the end guys and girls - not my thing. It is not me, as far as i know :-)

I looked up som EXTERNAL LINK from different rehoming organisations to find out, what a rehomer has to give for a dog. Every single Organisation decides this on her own. You don`t "buy" your dog from them, but you give a donation, to avoid abuse. This means, you are the owner afterwards, but the contract tells you much more, what you may or not with the dog/bitch.
If i buy a greyhound via Classifieds, it is fully mine afterwards and i can do, what i may wish (within the regular legislation). Big difference.

You may find other sites as well; what i saw is this:

Ireland:
D.A.W.G.
EXTERNAL LINK ...We ask for a minumum donation of 100 per neutered male and 120 per spayed female...
..A minimum donation of 60 Euro is requested for a vaccinated puppy under 6 mths old....

L.A.W.
EXTERNAL LINK .......The minimum donation for a dog or puppy is 120 euros ......

Italy
GACI:
EXTERNAL LINK ......150 per ogni liviero.....

Germany
Tieroase Birkenschold:
EXTERNAL LINK dogs not neutered /Hunde unkastriert: 200,00 Euro - contract says, you have to neuter yourself within special time......
dogs neutered/ Hunde kastriert: 300,00 euro

Here (among many others) I can not find any thing about homing fees:
UK - EXTERNAL LINK Ger - EXTERNAL LINK Ireland: EXTERNAL LINK

If i`d want an Organisation over here, to rehome one of my dogs, i`d have to pay for them to take the dog in - unlike, whether neutered, vaxd etc. or not.

Would like everyone to think that way. Would end the debate on pts greyhounds.

And be assured - i myself paid the transportation of my Irish dog, but not every rehomer can do so. That is what donations are good for: One who cannot rehome, may help otherwise.

You my dear, in your far away chair, are not God. Barry, as everyone who is genuinely interested in this topic knows, is Barry Coleman, the man in charge of rescue support. He has said that it is between him and each individual rescue what their donation is. His email is [email protected] There is no point in discussing this when he has requested us not to do so. Now back to the topic of European rehoming.

No Karin. The IGB (DJ Histon in fact) set up arrangements with rehoming groups in Europe. Whats the point in them subsidising Irish Rescues to let the dogs sit and rot ??? The only way to home them in such vast quantities is in Europe. Sure they even bought a transport van for the lady that rehomes for them in France
