whilst sitting in the waiting room at my vets, a young woman arrives with a beautiful white and fawn bitch.

on speaking to her, i am told the bitch is an adopted girl.
and the passion this woman showed about how she treats this girl, and how the girl is accepted in the home and more importantly, in the neighbourhood....seems she is a well known lassie and people flock to pat her etc;

geez it warms your heart when speaking with people who adopt greys....there is no doubt they are 'different' from us who train dogs (nothing offensive there)being so passionate and treat those dogs like kids.

and the stories they tell about other successful greys being adopted , certainly encourages you to help them out with donations or whatever, as they are the silent heroes in our industry.

it was a real pleasure and enjoyment during that small time i had with them, but one thing i noticed was just how well behaved that grey was....and she was loving every bit of the attention anyone was going to give her.

well done GAP and SAFENET......if this is examples of your standards, you are winning the battle....people really do love and adore the greyhound, and not only for racing either.

Greyhound Safety Net - that's us Daryl

and yes - we do see the dogs differently, and trainers are often quite amazed when they catch up with their exracers at our gatherings.

i dips me lids ann.
you guys and other organisations do a great job in placing these beautiful creatures into homes where people really do enjoy their friendships.

and that lady i spoke with the other day was a great example of her understanding that they are pets as well as racers...didnt bother her she was an ex racer who had inbuilt instincts, she loved that bitch.

i have one here myself who is racing, not well, but her best is always hindered by illness or injuries.

we are at the crossroads with her...the decision is easy for us....she stays no matter what.
we grew with her from the time we bought her at 3 months, and we have shared all her pain, and shed a lot of money in keeping her sound, but the time is near for that decision to be made....and we have accepted that she is going to become a house pet....actually she is that now as she has spent so much time in our lounge with recoveries, she practically owns the sofa....we dont care because we have a great friend in her and she is happy and content with us....how can you rid a friend because she cant win or do what we want her to do.

so in a way it saves you guys some time and worry in homing a dog like her, because we have made the decision on her behalf....and we are at peace with that.

well done ann, and i placed my change in the collectors tin at the reception, due to the happiness i saw from that lady and that bitch....it was worth it.

I take offence at that Darryl, there are some people who train dogs and are just as, if not more passionate and also treat their dogs like kids.

Yes, all my racedogs are treated as pets as well, as they all are part of the family and very much loved, I talk to them all day long when I am out in their kennels. When they are at the races, I often talk to them to encourage them to try their best and they feel happy and confident. Even walking out onto the track to the boxes, I continually whisper encouragement to my dogs.

Most of my racedogs are getting on nearly 4 years old in a month/few months however I won't get rid of them because they are not 'disposable' items. I have had to knock back offers to train better dogs that could win a few at Wenty, simply because I don't have room to take them as long as my current racing team are here.
I have 7 dogs in work and 5 pups coming back from the breakers in a couple of months.

I will have to build extra day yards for my future retirees lol

I'm sorry but I too take offence at your comment Daryl, if you want to speak for yourself that's fine - but don't tar us all with the same brush.

i cant and wont cater for everyone in the dog game sue....but im also not stupid.....i did say 'nothing offensive' in my statement.

join sue as easily offended...im writing about the good of the program, not panda to every individual person in the world....get down or you will hurt yourselves from the extreme heights you place yourselves.

i am offended that you women have turned this into a bitch session about how good you are with your dogs....i dont know you all so i will take your words for it.

but i am praising a great organisation and the tireless work they do....you look after your own in your own ways, thats great.

dont bitch session this.

Not a bitch session Daz, just a right of reply.

You did say they are "Different from us who trains dogs being so passionate and treat their dogs like kids."

That to me was saying that those who train dogs are not passionate and don't treat their dogs like kids, did I misinterpret?

thankyou nick....there are so many categories of dog lovers.
as you say there are DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF PERSONS....how do you lovely ladies who are so offended know that maybe i might be seeing the person on the other side speaking to me as 'different'

would that be offensive?

i am well aware of the people who i do know whether they love there dogs or not....and my group that i know, love there dogs, but will still place them in GAP or SAFETY NET....SO I SHOULD I JUDGE THAT?

anyway, i wont say another word about this as i feel its denegrating these great organisations who obviously do a wonderful job and deserve all the accolades they and i can throw there way.

thanks nick.

carole,
i have only come back into the game since 1986....did not exist back then.

my idea of adoption is keep my own...and thats all i can do.
regulations wont allow me to keep to many thats for sure, so i will stick to my own devises, and donate when i can...i feel good about that.

Yes I agree that we should all do our part to assist the adoption groups as much as we can in terms of donations etc as without them there would be a great many more dead greyhounds.

I 'dips me lid' to these great organisations that do so much for our greyhounds.

we have kept virtually every racedog we had as a pet when they have finished racing, and from day one of becoming a pet, u would think they never raced at all.

they r as friendly as any other dog, they don't bark, and half the neighbours wouldn't have a clue we even had a dog they r so content.

Carole we're probably a bit more advanced here in Australia as far as animal welfare is concerned in comparison to some other countries. You can be sure any maltreatment of any breed of dog will hit the newspapers and the TV news in Australia and thankfully these have been few and far between in recent years, people here know that if they mistreat any animal they won't get away with it for long.

With Daryl not ticking a box in relation to adoption that probably means he himself is not actively involved in any adoption program, but as he has posted he totally supports them. All of Australia is covered by the GAP (Greyhound Adoption Program) and these are all funded by the racing industry. If you are an owner or trainer who doesn't (or can't) keep all of your retirees you can place them with GAP who will find them a good home. GAP follows strict protocols where all dogs spend time with a foster carer, are thoroughly assessed, health checked, desexed and microchipped and of course equally important all adopters are also assessed as to their suitably to own and care for one of our wonderful dogs.

So all greyhound participants in Australia contribute to GAP by way of funding that is taken out prior to prizemoney allocation, others of course like Daryl, donate and raise funds on top of that, many foster carers are also greyhound racing participants who also give their time freely to retired dogs.

and it shocks me the number of trainers who are not kind in their comments regarding the funding of GAP. I have 4 going next week which brings the number of dogs I have placed into GAP to 20.
