There's also the point that something stressing can upset the dog even several months in - like Doc peeing after the builders came, as I mentioned before. That was about 8 months in actually.

I can't read Bowen's mind either but my guess is that something which started as a medical problem (the diarrhoea) is becoming a learned habit, because he knows it'll get attention during the long lonely watches of the night. It's horrible to have to clear up after him, I know, but try not to get cross with him when you do because these dogs are very sensitive and it'll only make him more panicky about the whole issue, creating a vicious circle. Just count to ten and put him silently into another room if you can, so he doesn't see you clearing up, and be sure to use a proprietary pet cleaner or solution of bio washing powder to get rid of the smell.

So far as prevention is concerned I'd try some of the things I and others have already suggested - open bedroom door, you sleeping downstairs, borrowing a crate, changing mealtimes - as seems appropriate. If you can bear it you might also try setting the alarm to get up in the middle of the night yourself, just to give him a loo break (just silently in and out, no making a fuss of him) for a few nights, moving the hour later each time.

I'm assuming Bowen's in good health as I know you had a vet's visit and stool test before, however if the problem persists maybe there is a continuing medical issue and a return vet's visit is in order. I know you weren't happy with the vet you saw before, have you been able to find a new one yet? As with the crate your adoption group might be able to help with suggestions, or maybe a nearby racing stadium. Mine was a recommendation by the volunteer who did my original homecheck.

Sorry this has turned into rather an essay, hope some of it is helpful and that you and Bowen can get your problems sorted out very soon. He sounds a sweetie otherwise, only too eager to please, so I am sure you can crack it!

I have abandoned the idea of him going upstairs, they really are dangerous and until he wants to do it - which may be never - I think we are happy with the sleeping arrangements as they are.

He had two days of lapses when it was 3.30 and 3.50 am, a few days ago, but that hasn't been repeated recently.

I think it has been a cross between a physical and a communication problem. He and I are still learning each other's language, interpreting what we each are trying to tell the other, and it isn't always very clear.

We are getting there. He is a fantastic dog.

I was mentioning to Pia and you may have missed it - since Banjo has mastered her stairs, she's having a fine time going up and down. Maybe you and Bowen would like to call on Pia and Banjo for a little "show and tell"!

Yes I am very Happy for Moz to pop round so Banjo can demonstrate her newly found skills in going up and down stairs, and hopping on the bed for a snooze.

I'm so pleased that Bowen's been doing better at night. I'm sure you're right, it's just a question of the two of you getting to know each other's language and building up an understanding. Sooner rather than later he'll go right through until you want to get up anyway I'm sure, these dogs seem to have iron bladders especially when it's raining and they don't fancy a trip out!
